Some 19 years ago – can it really be that long? – Northcliff High School from Johannesburg presented Me And My Girl starring the inimitable Jonathan Roxmouth in the lead role of Bill Snibson and featuring, in the chorus, appearing in her first Northcliff production, the now celebrated Carmen Pretorius. Also in that 2004 production at the Playhouse in Durban, was Connell Cruise who has now risen to fame and acclaim as a songwriter and recording artist.
Me And My Girl is comedy at its funniest with tunes at their merriest and is an entertainment that will enthral one and all of all ages. At its recent run in Johannesburg, the show was received with raves, encores and tumultuous ovation. “The best show I have EVER seen!” was the reaction from one enthusiastic audience member.
The story is of an unexpected heir to a title and large estate. He was born out of a clandestine alliance between the lord of the manor and a young woman “not of aristocracy”. Upon his demise however, Lord Hareford’s will determines that the heir should be found and groomed to a level of sophistication befitting his new-found status in order to inherit and this leads to no end of comic situation as he is found to be a somewhat uncouth Cockney yahoo. The fun and laughs never end.
This will be the 39th production for Northcliff High and the 23rd to tour to the Playhouse from acclaimed producer/director Nick Jourdan, who has been responsible for bringing The Adams Family, Spamalot, Sister Act and the highly popular previous offerings, High School Musical and Footloose to the Playhouse Theatre, to name a few.
Me And My Girl, now affectionately dubbed the “Lambeth Walk” musical, is filled with song and dance and happy moments and is just the order to chase away the blues and leave one uplifted with the tunes hummable on the journey home.
Albeit this is a school production, the young cast, assisted by their technical crew, delivers remarkable performances in this slick and polished production.
In the lead role, is Lyndan Meyers who, last year, portrayed the role of Ren McCormack in Footloose The Musical. He is a talent of note and looks set to go far.
His counterpart in the role of girlfriend Sally Smith, is the newly-discovered Aaqilah Basson whose vocal ability is hugely impressive and she is an accomplished dancer to boot.
