DURBAN FILMMART INSTITUTE UNVEILS THE LINE-UP OF PLATFORMS AND STREAMERS

The Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) is delighted to unveil the line-up of platforms and streamers participating in the highly anticipated 2023 DFM Industry Programme. The 14th edition of the DFM will run from July 21 to 24, embracing the theme African Constellation to celebrate the remarkable talent of the African film industry.

The DFM will feature an impressive array of international and local streaming and exhibition platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Showmax and Viu as part of its 2023 Industry Programme. Together with TRACE Studios and TikTok, the FilmMart will feature panel discussions and masterclasses hosted by these platforms.

** Netflix

Netflix will have a strong presence at the DFM 2023, offering both a masterclass and panel discussion. We’ll hear from specialist Edmond Laccon, as well as fellow Netflix executives, as they explore the elements that make up successful and valuable visual styles in film. They’ll also be hosting a panel that will feature a range of local distribution companies, as well as Netflix Director of Content for the Middle East and Africa (MEA), Ben Amadasun, discussing the art and science behind distribution in an African context, among other interesting topics.

** Prime Video

The inclusion of Prime Video this year is notable as the service has only recently entered the African content landscape. They will be hosting a Q&A session exploring how Prime Video is showcasing authentic African content to a global audience, and you'll have the opportunity to learn about Prime Video’s strategies and plans for Africa, as well as their upcoming releases from the continent. We’ll be joined by Ayanna Lonian of Prime Video, and other prominent industry voices.

** Viu

Viu is another anticipated newcomer to the DFM programme. They are a leading pan-regional over-the-top (OTT) video streaming service, and we’ll be hearing from Ryan Solovei and Farzana Wadee from Viu South Africa about how the streaming service works with local storytellers in the markets they’re in.

** TRACE Studios

TRACE Studios’ Beverley Mitchell will be presenting a masterclass on finding your voice as an authentic storyteller. In the roaring vortex of (mis)information that bombards us daily, how do you know what is authentic and what is not? And how do you make your voice heard? This masterclass will offer participants helpful tools to discover their own voices and craft compelling and authentic stories of their own.

** Showmax & Multichoice

The 2023 DFM Industry programme will also feature a panel discussion, hosted by executives from Showmax and Multichoice, on how best to create and pitch a series for the likes of Showmax, Mzansi Magic, M-Net, kykNET, Africa Magic and more. The panel will also explore Showmax’s partnership with Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky and its pending re-launch, which will be powered by Peacock's globally scaled technology.

The participation of these internationally-renowned streamers and platforms at the 2023 Durban FilmMart not only signifies their commitment to supporting and showcasing African content, but also provides unique opportunities for growth within the industry.
