KZNPO SPRING SYMPHONY CONCERT #3: REVIEW

Perfect choice of tempi, sensitive warm piano tone, sparkling finger virtuosity and characteristic musical interest, were some of the features of Nikita Mndoyants’s performance of Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto. What a pleasure! (Review by Barbara Trofimczyk)

The third concert of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s Spring Symphony Season took place at the Playhouse Opera Theatre on November 2, 2023.

Programme:

Schubert – “Rosamunde” Overture

Beethoven - 3rd Piano Concerto : Max Bruch – Symphony No 3

Conductor – Daniel Boico

Pianist – Nikita Mndoyants

Two notably outstanding musicians took centre stage at Thursday’s Symphony Concert, the third in the KZNPO’S 2023rd Spring Season, namely Conductor Daniel Boico, and Piano soloist Nikita Mndoyants.

Under Boico’s direction, Schubert’s melodious “Rosamunde”Overture was beautifully played, while, in Bruch’s relatively unknown 3rd Symphony (not to be compared to the extensive symphonic works of the great masters but nevertheless ‘very creative, lyrical and enjoyable to hear’, to quote programme notes!), there was good balance between the sections of the orchestra and attention to dynamics and musical characterisation.

Boico focused especially on the colourful orchestration of Bruch’s score, coaxing interesting interplay between the instruments, also some fine expressive string playing in the slow movement.

Perfect choice of tempi, sensitive warm piano tone, sparkling finger virtuosity and characteristic musical interest, were some of the features of Nikita Mndoyants’s performance of Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto. What a pleasure!

The delightful encore (was it Scarlatti?) which displayed his excellent technical precision, won him a standing ovation. - Barbara Trofimczyk

The last concert of the Spring Symphony Season will take place on Thursday November 9, at the Playhouse Opera at 19h00.

Booking is through Quicket.
