NEIL GONSALVES TRIO FOR CENTRE OF JAZZ

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal proudly presents the Neil Gonsalves trio on Wednesday February 28, 2024, at 17h30.

Composer, pianist, educator, Neil Gonsalves has a deep and abiding love of township music and dance. It is among the most vibrant sounds and images of his childhood memory, and its bounce and vitality are as central to his music as they are to Mzansi culture. Mbaqanga offers an interesting musical form and inclusive model for weaving together the multi-coloured strands of a South African life. It provides an endless source of inspiration and prism for musical exploration and coalescence.

As a work in progress, this musical thinking expresses itself in virtually all of Neil’s catalogue, so expect some tunes from the trio’s latest release, Blessings and Blues, but mainly new songs that are variations of the broad theme. The Neil Gonsalves Trio includes Talent Mzukulu on bass and Riley Giandhari on drums.
