TWO PALM SUNDAY WEEKEND EVENTS AT MARIANNHILL

There are two very special Palm Sunday weekend events both taking place at Mariannhill: The Durban Catholic Players’ Guild will present its annual theatrical presentation of The Way of the Cross on Saturday afternoon (March 23 at 15h00) on the grounds of the Mariannhill Monastery Church; and the Durban Symphonic Choir, in association with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, presents the magnificent Mozart Requiem on Sunday (March 24 at 15h00) in St Joseph’s Cathedral, Mariannhill Monastery:

The Way of the Cross:

The Way of the Cross is being staged by Durban Catholic Players’ Guild (who stage the Passion Play in Durban every five years) in association with the Knights of da Gama on Saturday March 23 at 15h00 at the grounds of the Mariannhill monastery church (behind the tea garden).

This production, also known as the Passion of Christ, enacts the events from the time Jesus was condemned by Pilate until he died and was buried. As preparation for the Easter celebrations, Christians traditionally meditate on the events leading up to the Resurrection by praying for and remembering the “Way of the Cross” (or “The Stations of the Cross”).

There is no entrance fee, and all are welcome. Parking is available in the monastery grounds. For more information contact 083 564 2929.

Mozart Requiem

Then on Sunday March 24 at 15h00, there is the magnificent Mozart Requiem at St Joseph’s Cathedral also at Mariannhill presented by the Durban Symphonic Choir, in association with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

Enjoy a mood-setting selection of Easter orchestral and solo music in the first half, followed by the magnificent Mozart Requiem after a short interval.

Directed by Ros Conrad, accompanied by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Lykele Temmingh, with soloists Sibonelo Mbanjwa, Robyn Gillespie, Stella Zakas, Mervyn Bartholomew, Sabelo Ngcobo, Thembi Hadebe, Zonke Zincume and Andile Dlamini, this performance is not to be missed.
