LAMINATED ROTIS: RAGAS AND SAGAS

Friends of Professor Pieter Scholtz invite audiences on a magical-mystery-musical tour at the forthcoming Mondays @ Six programme at St Clements on August 5, 2024. Be transported, entertained, engaged and enlightened by architect of note and pre-eminent Durban musician Iqbal Naroth (and friends). Paul Mikula to do the introductions.

Durban architect and musician Iqbal Naroth’s Laminated Rotis: Ragas and Sagas is a unique and fascinating event that combines music, spirituality and friends. Ragas and Sagas features Indian classical music played by Naroth (and friends) on authentic instruments like sitar, tabla and santoor. The event explores and shares with the audience the healing and holistic aspects of sound and rhythm via music created by, and on, these instruments.

Sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, who gave The Beatles’ George Harrison sitar lessons, said: “Music has the power to heal, uplift, and transform lives.”

“This event explores the healing aspects of sound and rhythm. The presentation aims to leave the audience with a basic understanding of the concepts,” says Naroth.

Iqbal Naroth has been playing music for 65 years (since he was five years old). He went to India to study music for the first time 45 years ago and has returned there a number of times to study. For the St Clements evening, expect to see six people on stage, including four musicians. Naroth also has a jazz band but for his Monday at Six at St Clements Laminated Rotis: Ragas and Sagas debut, he will take us on a special musical journey. He humbly requests that minimal alcohol is consumed during the performance to allow for participation and engagement.

When the donation box is passed around, a suggested minimum of R50 per person would be welcome.

Weather permitting, the performance will be outdoors. Indoors if it rains.
