Breadcrumbs, penned by the talented Jennifer Haley, debuted at the American Theatre Festival in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, in 2010, captivating audiences with its poignant narrative and compelling characters.

Centred around the enigmatic Alida, portrayed with depth by Fiona Ramsay, the play unveils a rich tapestry of emotions and experiences. Alida, a recluse haunted by a tumultuous past, grapples with the daunting diagnosis of dementia, challenging her fiercely independent nature. Enter Beth, portrayed by the dynamic Nqobile Masondo, a nurse’s assistant thrust into Alida’s world by fate.

As Beth steps into Alida’s life to assist in chronicling her autobiography, a delicate yet potent dynamic unfolds. Their relationship, akin to a strange reflection in a funhouse mirror, teeters between vulnerability and strength. Alida, accustomed to solitude, finds herself drawn into Beth’s whirlwind of impulsivity and longing for connection. Conversely, Beth’s vivacity serves as a stark reminder of Alida’s own unresolved traumas, mirroring the abandonment she experienced at the hands of her mother.

Within the confines of Alida’s home, a captivating dance ensues, blending moments of tenderness with raw authenticity. Through their interactions, Jennifer Haley masterfully navigates the complexities of human connection, inviting audiences on a journey of self-discovery and redemption.

Breadcrumbs is more than a theatrical production; it’s a profound exploration of the human psyche, leaving audiences spellbound and introspective long after the final curtain falls.

Directed by Ralph Lawson, Breadcrumbs runs in the Playhouse Loft on August 8 and 10, 2024. Tickets available at Webtickets.
