On Wednesday, Student band The Art Messengers to Bring Jazz
and Afro Pop to the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.
The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal is thrilled to present the Art Messengers on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 17h30. This all-student ensemble, formed in 2023, will showcase their dynamic blend of jazz and Afro pop in a performance that promises to captivate and inspire.
The Art Messengers, comprising some of UKZN’s most talented students, includes Kgothatso Mosome on drums, Makgashule Thotela on piano and keys, Zolile Mgqatsa on bass, Sifundo Myeza on trumpet and Thembalethu Bhengu on vocals.
Since their formation, the Art Messengers have been a vibrant presence at UKZN, performing at prestigious events such as the Artfluence Festival and the Multi Genre Festival 2023. Their repertoire features a rich fusion of jazz and Afro pop, reflecting both their individual talents and collective synergy.
Drummer Kgothatso Mosome, originally from Witpoortjie in Johannesburg, began his musical journey at age six, playing drums in his local church. His influences include Teddy Campbell and Quincy Jones. Currently pursuing a degree in music at UKZN, Kgothatso has performed with Sibusiso Mashiloane and is a stalwart of the UKZN Jazz Band. Makgashule Thotela from Soweto, initially a drummer, found his true passion in jazz piano. Mentored by renowned pianists and inspired by performances such as Bokani Dyer's, Makgashule has made notable appearances, including at the Durban ICC in 2023. Zolile Mgqatsa hails from Qumbu in the Eastern Cape. He began his musical exploration early, inspired by his father and artists like Ron Carter. His journey through various instruments and institutions has culminated in his current studies at UKZN, where he continues to refine his artistry.
Sifundo Myeza, a trumpet player from Umlazi, was inspired by local musicians and the Salvation Army band from a young age. His performances with notable musicians and orchestras have shaped his current pursuit of a jazz degree at UKZN, where he is guided by esteemed mentors. Thembalethu Bhengu from Pretoria is a rising jazz vocalist influenced by South African legends such as Sibongile Khumalo and Simphiwe Dana. With a background in choral music, she is eager to expand her repertoire and develop her unique voice in the jazz genre.
The concert takes place at the UKZN Centre for Jazz on September 11, 2024. Doors open at 17h00, Music starts at 17h30
