Saints Music Academy was started 16 years ago just after Music education was no longer subsidized by the Department of Education. Most schools have the facilities but there were empty classes and so The Saints Music Academy was established. The Academy is based at St Andrew’s School Bloemfontein, but is a completely independent institution. Music lessons are offered in a wide range of instruments. The department teaches piano, drums, bass, guitar and vocal and so as soon as the students were able to play, the Academy started making bands to give the students the opportunity to use their skills in a group. This has been a great success story! There are bands with kids from the age of 8 years old already! The skills they learn over and above the instrument itself is immeasurable. They learn how to play with others and work as a group, and to see how they grow as individuals in confidence as little humans is incredibly rewarding.
The organisation says: “Our touring band is like our first team! These students have learnt how to master their instruments and very often other instruments, too. They are exposed to numerous instruments and we find that they develop their skills in a variety of ways. Our students do all the work when we gig, they set up sound and do the mixing themselves as well. We feel that the focus is all on the students and showing what they are able to do and enable them in as many ways possible for now and the future as well. They are well-rounded individuals who are equipped in as many aspects of the music industry possible.
“As an extension of their progress, we started a studio under the MUSOSHUB name where they are able to learn about sound production and mastering. We have had some of our own students record their albums and songs and launched into the Music Industry. This outlet allows for students to take it a step further in that their skills are developed in a whole different way and as session musicians.
“Our students do covers of all types of genres, from Elvis Presley, The Troggs, Gloria Gaynor, The Cranberries, Meghan Trainor, OutKast, Billie Eilish to name a few. They also perform some of their original songs. We encourage them to find their own style within the different genres.
“We have toured different places in the country and always very well received. Our last tour was to the Eastern Cape where we were able to perform at the Acoustic Café, and different schools like Woodridge College and Kingswood College. The students have taken part in various Battle of the Bands competitions held at St Mary’s in Johannesburg where you enter with a cover and an original. Our students are multi-talented and very diverse. They do not restrict themselves to one style of music and continuously stretch their abilities.
Music Through the Ages will keep your foot tapping and you singing with to all the well-known songs. We invite you to be part of a journey through time! We look forward to seeing you!”
