Every note of Evan’s talented playing, and vocals, was audible and the room was filled with delicious sound. (Review by Janet Caruth)
Running at Rhumbelow Theatre for another two performances
(Friday being sold out) Evan Cullum’s Piano
Man is a wonderful, joyful show and well-received by an engaged audience.
This performer has an easy-going manner, making the renditions chosen look
easy, although we all know the talent required for these piano notes, to ooze
off the ivories and into the packed house. The white baby grand Piano is set
centre stage and is well lit throughout the show.
Small costume changes easily transport the mood from one genre to the next. Cullum captured the flamboyance of Elton John well and the audience was happily ready to sing along to the chorus of Crocodile Rock. Evan Cullum has a light touch when to comes to humour; a natural comic. Many a mirthful moment was enjoyed by the audience. A varied selection of tunes was chosen by performers such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Joel, Elton John, Marc Cohn, Ray Charles, Barry Manilow, Burton Cummings and an interesting take on the well-known A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton.
The lighting was bright and festive for the pacey tunes, yet moody, and subtle when the number required it. The stage darkened for Ray Charles’ Georgia on my mind, which was a humbling salute to a great man.
The audio was clear and warm and the backing track blended very naturally. Every note of Evan’s talented playing, and vocals, was audible and the room was filled with delicious sound.
The encore was wonderful and the standing ovation very deserved. A great evening out and a show well worth seeing. - Janet Caruth
