The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will present SAZI ne SKOKIANA on Wednesday March 5, 2025, at 17h30.
The guitar-led quartet SKOKIANA (pictured) was formed in
1991 by township-bred University of Natal music students Sazi Dlamini (guitar),
the late saxophonist Leonard Rachabane, bassist Bongani Sokhela and drummer
Jabu Dube.
Over a period of more than three decades SKOKIANA line-ups
have included some of South Africa’s outstanding jazz and afro-jazz musicians
past and living – drummers/percussionists Chris Mashiane, Mike Chetty, Lebohang
Mothabeng, Maynard Mabatle, Geoffrey Tracey, Carlos di Stasi (Sao Paulo), Sisa
Sopazi, Nkanyezi Cele, Chicco Mdima, Dumisani Hlela, Bonga Mzimela, Sthembiso
Hlela, Sabelo Dlamini, Aubrey Khumalo; Paki Peloeole, Sibusiso Zondi, Sibusiso
Ncube; bassists Thami Mtshali, Monde Futshane, Phiwe Solomon, Njeza Dlamini,
Mandla Zikalala, Sandile Cele, Benard Mndaweni, Paul Nowinski, Ildo Nandja;
brassmen Feya Faku, Dumisani Nxumalo, Sakhile Simani, Sithembiso Bhengu,
