The KZN Young Performers Project management team is trying something new with their upcoming musical, Annie – offering a performance where theatre protocols are relaxed for one show on Friday July 4 at 19h00.

The performance on Friday 4 is a “relaxed” performance where formal theatre etiquette of silence and stillness won’t be enforced, enabling people and families with different needs, or have sensory disabilities, to feel welcomed, included and comfortable in a supportive environment.

Des Govender who heads the YPP Project, says: “We recognize that traditional theatre settings can sometimes present challenges for individuals who require a more accommodating environment. In response to this need, we are pleased to offer a relaxed performance of Annie the Musical.  During this specially-designated show, we will maintain a partially-lit auditorium and our ushers will not enforce traditional etiquette rules. This thoughtful approach aims to create a welcoming space for patrons who may not typically feel at ease in a conventional theatre setting.  We invite individuals and families who would benefit from a more relaxed atmosphere to join us for this unique performance. Our goal is to share the magic of live theatre with a broader audience and provide an inclusive experience for all.”

Annie is the story of the plucky youngster with distinctive curly hair and her quest for a bright new life outside of the walls of Miss Hannigan’s dreary orphanage, comes to the Playhouse Opera for a short season from July 4 – 13.

The production team for Annie sees Daisy Spencer in the director’s chair; with musical direction by Des Govender; choreography by Evashnee Pillay, costume design and props by Kathy and Dominic Singery; sound design by Anthony Govender and lighting by Dylan Heaton.

Annie features a cast of more than 120 young performers

A rags to riches feel-good story which celebrates hope, family and resilience, features some great show stopping numbers including Tomorrow, Hard Knock Life, You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile, Maybe, Little Girls and Easy Street. The original Broadway Musical is based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray and opened on stage in 1977 and ran for a record breaking near-six years.

Young Performers Project has, for the past 24 years, faithfully staged an annual musical theatre production with a youthful cast (with at least one professional performer) and a professional production team to provide the next generation of theatre practitioners with valuable experience of performing in a professional context.

Annie is staged by Young Performers Project in association with The Playhouse Company and DALRO. The show runs at 120 minutes, with an interval and is suitable for age four and above.

Public tickets: R150 to R280 (OAPS:  10% Discount on all seats) available through Webtickets and Pick n Pay stores nationwide.
