Wow Comedy JamzJuly edition takes place on July 23 in the Playhouse Opera featuring Durban’s own Eubulus Tracy and Glen Bo sharing the stage with an ex-Durbanite, John Vlismas and the internationally celebrated Marc Lottering.
Wow Comedy Jamzhas been tickling Durban’s funny bone on a monthly basis and will continue this month with even bigger comics.
Award-winning comedian, John Vlismas is one of South Africa’s most prolific international comics. 2008 has seen him represent his country in Toronto, finishing in the top eight at the Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off, and perform at Freedom Day celebrations in Dubai, at the request of the South African Business Council. He is fresh from his one-man show in Johannesburg entitled Lucky Plebian, in June 2008.
The year started with a bang, as Vlismas produced the South African leg of Henry Rollin’s 2007/8 world tour, taking in the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town and the Bassline in Johannesburg. John is currently developing a primetime television comedy pilot at M.Net’s request. He also won the inaugural SA Comedy Award for Stand Up of the Year, with his one man show, Gay, Black & Immortal.
Of the stand-up comedians working the circuit in South Africa today, Vlismas has the widest international profile. While outspoken and sometimes controversial, Vlismas is a firm favourite in the corporate market. Not content with stand-up and MC work, John also writes for publications and lecture on MBA “Creategy” Electives at the Graduate School of Business.
Marc Lottering hails from Cape Town, and is considered by many to be one of South Africa’s hottest comics. The son of a Cape flats Pentecostal pastor, Lottering’s colourful upbringing is often reflected in his unique brand of comedy which has established him as a firm favourite with so many audiences.
In 1994, Lottering abandoned his law studies at the University of Cape Town and worked full-time in the fields of advertising and communications. His locally-flavoured comic streak was first brought to the fore in 1997 when his original one-man cabaret After The Beepwas performed to critical acclaim in Cape Town. Television appearances include It’s A Funny Country, Evita Live And Dangerousco-hosting the prestigious Woman Of The Year Awards for 2000, 2001 and 2006; Big Okes; Will The Real Marc Lottering Please Stand Up(2001); People Of The South; Marc Lottering and Friends(2002); and The Marc Lottering Show(2002).
Lottering made his international debut in 2001, when he performed alongside the likes of Pieter Dirk Uys, Hugh Masekela and Sibongile Khumalo as part of the Celebrate South Africa Concert, in London. On July 23 he will be sharing the stage with the equally celebrated John Vlismas in a feast of laughter supported by the Durban Arts, East Coast Radio and The Daily News.
