The History Channel will present a new season of Alone on August 6 followed on Thursdays at 19h25.

In one of the boldest tests of endurance, 10 contestants will once again enter the wilderness carrying only what they can fit in a small backpack for the new season of Alone.

Set in the extreme Canadian North, a remote area in the Northwest Territories, this season features a landscape rich in natural resources, predators, and prey. The rivers and lakes offer abundant fishing, while the forests and mountains provide ample hunting opportunities.

However, the subarctic climate is unforgiving and teeming with predators like brown bears and wolves. This season of Alone will be a global competition, featuring the most geographically diverse cast in the show’s history to determine who is the world’s top survivalist.

Now in its 34th year, the Hilton Arts Festival (The Hilton Festival) returns to Hilton College in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands from August 7 to 9, 2026, unveiling its biggest and boldest programme yet. ARNO CARSTENS at the Hilton Arts Festival –

For the first time, Arno Carstens performs live at the Hilton Arts Festival with his band, David Watkyns and Giovanni Serci. One of South Africa's most celebrated artists, Carstens is a platinum-selling singer-songwriter, award-winning musician and accomplished fine artist. He first rose to prominence as the iconic frontman of Springbok Nude Girls before launching a hugely successful solo career spanning eight acclaimed albums. With his distinctive voice, compelling stage presence and fearless creativity, Arno continues to captivate audiences through both his music and visual art.

 

Behind the Crimson Door –

Created by renowned designer Gert-Johan Coetzee in collaboration with performance company The Cirk, Behind the Crimson Door is a spectacular theatrical fashion experience that blends couture, aerial artistry, dance and storytelling. It follows Charlotte, a young farm girl who leaves home to pursue her dreams in the city, celebrating courage, transformation and the magic that unfolds when you dare to step into the unknown.

 

Constellations –

British playwright Nick Payne's Constellations, directed by Jay Pather, is a captivating two-hander exploring how the smallest choices can dramatically alter the course of our lives. Blending love, science and quantum theory, it is a moving exploration of infinite possibility, heartbreak and hope.

 

The Drakensberg Boys Choir LIVE in Concert –

Affectionately known as South Africa's "Singing Ambassadors", the Drakensberg Boys Choir returns with its trademark energy, versatility and world-class musicianship. From traditional choral works to contemporary African rhythms, this promises to be one of the Festival's musical highlights.

Midnight in Parys –

In true Paul Slabolepszy style, Midnight in Parys is edge-of-your-seat theatre with an explosive finale. Tender, topical and emotionally-charged, the play explores the fragility of life and the choices that shape our lives, leaving audiences with much to reflect on long after the curtain falls.

 

The Tramp –

This inventive one-man production celebrates the life and legacy of Charlie Chaplin, weaving together the story of the legendary actor and his beloved alter ego, The Tramp. Blending theatre, music and movement, the production features Chaplin's own compositions alongside imaginative reinterpretations of pop, jazz, rock and musical theatre classics, offering a fresh perspective on the man behind the bowler hat.

 

The Opera Singer –

Featuring Fiona Ramsay, The Opera Singer is a compelling one-act drama exploring sacrifice, legacy and the fragile power of a voice. When a celebrated opera diva nearing the end of her career meets a young journalist determined to capture her story, their encounter raises timeless questions about ambition, love, memory, loss and what it means to leave a lasting legacy.

 

Out of Bounds –

Rajesh Gopie's internationally-acclaimed, award-winning one-man production remains one of South Africa's great theatrical successes. Through the remarkable portrayal of 28 vividly drawn characters, Out of Bounds offers a humorous, heartfelt and deeply-moving exploration of family, identity, culture and belonging. Having toured extensively both locally and abroad, it continues to captivate audiences with its authenticity, warmth and enduring relevance.

 

“Master Harold”...and the Boys –

Athol Fugard's celebrated South African classic is a deeply autobiographical one-act play set in apartheid-era South Africa during the 1950s. It examines how systemic racism and personal shame fracture the loving relationship between a privileged white teenager and the two Black men who have become his surrogate family.

 

And the Girls in their Sunday Dresses –

Set against the backdrop of an economic crisis in Lesotho, Zakes Mda's poignant drama follows two women from vastly different social backgrounds who meet while queuing for scarce essentials. As they share a chair and conversation, stories of love, loss, resilience and survival unfold in a moving exploration of class, dignity, friendship and hope.

 

Shackleton –

Back by popular demand, Shackleton recounts one of history's greatest survival stories. Ernest Shackleton's ambitious Antarctic expedition descends into a desperate fight for survival after the Endurance is crushed by ice, leaving the crew stranded in one of the harshest environments on earth. Their only hope lies in a fragile lifeboat and an extraordinary voyage across some of the world's most treacherous seas.

 

Weightless –

Weightless is a beautifully-crafted physical theatre work centred on the memories of neighbours living in a city apartment block. As a young girl's story gradually unfolds, audiences discover a moving tale of grief, compassion and community. Told through half-mask performance and Lecoq-inspired movement, it is a deeply-affecting production that balances loss with warmth, humour and humanity.

 

Epilogue –

Tim Plewman's latest work is an honest, funny and deeply personal reflection on growing older. Moving effortlessly between laughter and heartbreak, Epilogue explores the moments that shape our lives with warmth, wisdom and the masterful comic timing that has made Plewman one of South Africa's most enduring performers.

 

Netphlix-

Multi-award-winning comedian Sophie Joans returns with Netphlix, a witty and inventive new show that asks one deceptively simple question: what makes a good story? In under an hour, this fearless fringe performer hilariously attempts to recreate the entire Netflix catalogue while reminding audiences of the unique magic of live theatre.

 

THE FUNNY STUFF...

Stuck in Dubai –

South African comedy favourite Dalin Oliver returns to the stage with Stuck in Dubai, a hilarious new stand-up show inspired by an experience no traveller could have imagined. While en route to perform at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, conflict in the region left him stranded in Dubai for four days. In true South African style, Dalin transformed an unexpected travel nightmare into comedy gold, finding laughter, love and plenty of lekkerness along the way.

 

Bump & Grind –

Comedy duo Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert bring their signature blend of music, mayhem and laugh-out-loud sketch comedy to the Festival in this high-energy theatrical romp. Packed with unforgettable characters, dazzling costume changes, song and dance, Bump & Grind is fast-paced, brilliantly performed and guaranteed to leave audiences in stitches.

 

Rob van Vuuren LIVE!

Multi-award-winning comedy legend Rob van Vuuren returns to the Hilton Arts Festival for one show only. With more than three decades of entertaining audiences around the world, Rob brings his trademark mix of razor-sharp stand-up, outrageous storytelling and wonderfully unpredictable humour to what promises to be one of the comedy highlights of the Festival.

 

Dead Dad –

Reprising his role as the hapless Lukas, award-winning writer and performer Louw Venter returns with Dead Dad, the darkly hilarious sequel to his smash hit The Best Man's Speech. Venter takes audiences on an emotional rollercoaster as his character attempts to deliver his father's eulogy - with predictably disastrous results. Sharp writing, superb comic timing and moments of genuine poignancy combine in this unforgettable one-man performance.

 

Rugby Mad –

Aaron McIlroy's energetic one-man comedy dives headfirst into the wonderfully obsessive world of rugby. Bassey and Me –

International cabaret performer Tonya Koenderman celebrates the extraordinary career of Dame Shirley Bassey in this heartfelt musical tribute. How To Cook Your Husband –

Going South –

Created by husband-and-wife duo Nicolás and Katharina Rodríguez López of Hot Club D'Afrique, Going South is an original musical collaboration blending jazz, funk, alternative rock and pop. Filmed at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, Mama-demic follows Dr Ayanda Ntinga as she balances motherhood with life inside one of South Africa's busiest public maternity wards. Seven-year-old Thulile's first solo trip to the local shop becomes every parent's nightmare when a stranger lures her off-course. ABOUT JONGOSI

AuthenticA Series Lab returns for fifth year, inviting applications from African screenwriters

The AuthenticA Series Lab, a screenwriters programme from South African-based non-profit Realness Institute, is now open for applications for its 5th edition. This six-month programme is delivered in partnership with The StoryBoard Collective, a Swiss non-profit organisation dedicated to holding space for storytellers from underrepresented communities. Series Mania returns as the programme festival partner, where the writers will pitch their projects to industry decision-makers as part of the African Series Pitch in Lille, France, in March 2027. The Canada Media Fund also returns for a third year as a funding partner, supporting the participation of one African Canadian writer in the programme.

The programme has supported 15 African writers since its inception, with some writers currently in active co-production conversations with companies across the UK, France, Canada and the US. Now entering its milestone fifth year, the AuthenticA Series Lab comes at a time when the industry is particularly volatile and unstable, making this offering even more necessary.

The programme welcomes submissions of original series projects in any genre, from writers living in Africa or the African diaspora, provided the story concept is set in Africa. Four writers will be selected for the programme, which is conducted through a mixture of online and in-person sessions, taking place from September 2026 to April 2027. Selected writers will be mentored by Selina Ukwuoma, Story Consultant and Director of Writing Programmes, and Mehret Mandefro, Creative Producer and Managing Director of the Realness Institute.

Selina Ukwuoma says: “The lab offers writers a rare opportunity to take creative risks. It gives them the confidence to trust their most audacious ideas and shape them into series with real craft, rigour and clarity.”

Mehret Mandefro adds: “Giving writers the time and space to bring their boldest ideas at a time when the industry is so unstable is the best way we know how to meet this moment.”

Experienced industry experts are invited to engage with the cohort as guest speakers, sharing their insights and professional journeys through case studies, offering a range of industry perspectives and practical guidance. Past guest speakers have included Anthony Q. Farrell (Writer/Director/Producer, Canfro Productions), Layla Swart (Producer/Co-Founder, Yellowbone Entertainment), Aoife Lennon-Ritchie (Managing Director of Torchwood Literary & Scouting), Sameer Gardezi (Founder, Break the Room Media) and Pauline Fischer (Founder & CEO, PMF Media Group, Inc.).

For the fifth year the programme opens with in-person sessions in Ethiopia, a first, and then moving through online sessions, which culminates in a two-month residency in Geneva, Switzerland, before the cohort pitches at Series Mania in Lille, France. The outcome of the programme is that each participant will deliver a pitch deck and a pilot script. The rights to the material developed through the programme will remain with each writer.

Laure de Peretti de la Rocca, Director of The StoryBoard Collective, says: “This programme reflects what we believe in: backing bold storytelling from voices the industry hasn't made enough room for. Partnering for this lab, and hosting the AuthenticA writers in Geneva at the StoryBoard House, is how we put that belief into action.”

ACT and Tanaka Pictures launch NPO Bootcamp vodcast for South Africa’s arts and culture non-profit sector

Premiering on YouTube on July 13, 2026, the series shares practical leadership lessons from the people building and sustaining creative sector organisations.

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT), in partnership with Tanaka Pictures, will launch NPO Bootcamp: Arts & Culture Edition on YouTube on July 13, 2026 under the ACT Centre of Excellence banner.

The vodcast series brings together leaders and practitioners from South Africa’s arts and culture non-profit sector for honest, practical conversations about what it takes to build, lead and sustain organisations working in the creative economy.

Hosted by Nobantu Mqulwana, Managing Director of Tanaka Pictures, the series moves beyond surface-level inspiration to explore the leadership realities, operational challenges and hard-earned lessons behind organisations that are driving change in the sector.

Across South Africa’s arts and culture sector, non-profit organisations play a vital role in creating access, developing talent, supporting communities and expanding participation in the creative economy. Yet much of the practical knowledge needed to build and sustain these organisations is learned through experience, often in isolation. NPO Bootcamp: Arts & Culture Edition responds to this gap by sharing real-world insight from leaders who are actively navigating the work.

The series launches with its first four interviewees, representing the beginning of a broader set of conversations to follow. Featured in the initial release are respected leaders and practitioners from across the arts and non-profit landscape, including Jack Devnarain, actor and Chairperson of the South African Guild of Actors; Nosipho Maketo-van den Bragt, Founder and CEO of Chocolate Tribe; Erica Elk, Group CEO of the Craft and Design Institute; and Nathi Simelane, Chief Operating Officer of Artist Proof Studio.

Through these conversations, the series explores governance, funding, partnerships, programme design, compliance, leadership, creative enterprise and long-term organisational resilience. It creates space for the kind of practical sector knowledge that is often difficult to access, especially for emerging organisations and practitioners working to strengthen their impact.

The Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Board of Directors, marking a new chapter for the organisation as it reaffirms its commitment to championing African film narratives and supporting industry professionals across the continent. The Board plays a central role in guiding DFMI's strategic direction, fostering sustainable growth, and advancing its mandate to facilitate local and international trade and investment in African film content.

DFMI management extends its sincere thanks to the outgoing Board of Directors for their dedication and commitment in ensuring the organisation remained relevant and met its strategic objectives during a challenging period.

Established in 2020, the Durban FilmMart Institute is a non-profit organisation that aims to be a leading hub for the African film industry, offering year-round support to film professionals and helping build global visibility for African content and talent. Alongside its training and development initiatives, the Institute's flagship event — Africa's premier film finance and co-production market, the annual Durban FilmMart — enters its 17th edition this October 2026.

Tshepiso Chikapa Phiri is the CEO and founder of the Known Associates Group of Companies, which includes a below-the-line agency, design studio, film production development and finance company and is currently building a state-of-the-Art film and television Studio in the Cradle of Humankind outside Johannesburg. KA skilfully produces and directs world-class projects in the communications, experiential, and relationship marketing industries, both locally and across Africa.

She is a University of Cape Town Alumni, with 20 years’ experience in communications, events, media, marketing, and film and television production. Her career includes working in international events including the North Sea Jazz Festival and Sithengi Film Festival. She has also worked in classic advertising as a ‘suit’. In 2007 she decided to commit to a career as a television and film producer. Her training ground was at Bomb Productions where she was the Associate Producer on the drama series Zone14. In 2008 she formed a boutique film and television production company Zing Entertainment with her partner Joel Phiri. Zing in partnership with Pulp Films produced MTN’s The Beautiful Game, a football documentary filmed throughout Africa.

She sits on the board of Media Heads 360 and is a shareholder in the business. She is a trustee of the Smile Artist Foundation and the Gerald Sekoto Trust. Tshepiso holds key industry roles including Co-Chair of SASFED, Deputy Chairperson of the IPO (formerly Chairperson and Treasurer), and Board Member at the Durban FilmMart Institute. She is also a leading voice in the Independent Black Filmmakers Collective (IBFC), advocating for transformation and inclusive growth across the African screen sector.

She is also on the board of the Cradle Nature Reserve, which controls over 10,000 hectares of land in the Cradle Precinct. In 2018 she founded Known Associates Entertainment with Dan Jawitz. The company has recently purchased Moonlighting Films PTY LTD, a leading television and film servicing company. The first KAE production, uBettina Wethu was a multi season series based on the Columbian smash hit telenovela YO SOY BETTY LA FEY (adapted as Ugly Betty in the US).

The company has serviced international productions including Universal Studios’ feature film, Beast and Sony Pictures’ The Woman King. KAE produced ETV’s first EVOD feature film, Atlantis (2021), John Barker’s The Umbrella Man, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and Fabian Medea’s feature film Wild Is The Wind, which premiered on Netflix in 2022.

Ameera Faber, whose career continues a three-generation family presence in storytelling, is an award-winning producer with extensive experience in transmedia campaigns. She has produced over 600 hours of television content broadcast on networks including SABC, e.tv, and Netflix, spanning documentary, factual, reality, and drama genres and reflecting a deep understanding of both African storytelling and global distribution.

Ameera serves as Deputy Chair of the Documentary Filmmakers Association and has served as a juror for the SAFTAs and the International Emmy Awards. She holds two bachelor's degrees, in Film and in Metaphysical Science, a master's degree in Business Psychology, and is pursuing a PhD in Conscious Business Ethics. She is an ordained minister and the author of several books on relationship-building in the film, television, music, and entertainment industries, and owns a post-production facility in Johannesburg that supports major SABC 1 soap operas. She is also co-founder of True Continent, an African documentary streaming platform, co-founder of The Superhero Project NPO, and founder of Coaching for Women, which focuses on leadership development for African women.

Khalid Shamis is an editor and educator, director and producer with a film-making practice over 25 years. His practice is strongly dedicated to the pedagogy of independent filmmaking and story construction in Africa, teaching and consulting in and outside film institutions and organised frameworks.

Khalid is a regular jury at film festivals and reads for film funds and workshops. He is on the executive board of the South African Guild of Editors, board member of the Durban Film Mart Institute, a member of Rough Cut Service and a doctoral fellow at the Centre for Humanities Research (CHR) at the University of the Western Cape. Khalid is also founder and director of Rough Cut Lab Africa, RCLA, a story support programme for independent African films at the rough cut stage.

Khalid’s films as editor are numerous, and as director notably Imam and I and The Colonel’s Stray Dogs.’

Masi Mtshali is an attorney specialising in intellectual property law. He holds an LL.B from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and is a member of the Legal Practice Council, the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law, and the International Trademark Association.

Masi assists businesses and individuals with trademark registration, copyright registration for cinematographic works, strategic advice on IP portfolios, and the protection of existing intellectual property from infringement and exploitation. His expertise makes him a valuable resource for those seeking to register and protect their intellectual property in the creative industries. He is Founder and Director of Mtshali & Associates Inc.

Mocke Jansen van Veuren is an experimental filmmaker, multimedia artist, educator and PhD candidate holding the positions of Deputy Head of Department at the Wits Department of Film & Television and Vice-Chair of Animation SA. His PhD research focuses on the development of unique, community-based film and animation production methodologies and pedagogies. He is the recipient of the FNB Art Prize (with Nelisiwe Xaba) in 2013, the UJ Chancellor’s Award for Research in 2013, and the Wits Vice Chancellor’s Award for Academic Citizenship in 2025.

Van Veuren has been deeply involved in the creation of national standards, qualifications and curricula in film, audio-visual production and animation. He has taught filmmaking, multimedia and animation at a number of institutions including UJ, Academy of Sound Engineering, AFDA and Wits over the past 20 years. He is a member of The Beehive Culture Worx, a grassroots collective developing and running community-based film and animation education and production programmes in Kliptown and Eldorado Park, and is currently developing an experimental animated documentary feature film with the collective.

Poovashnee Reddy is a Chartered Accountant and strategic finance and investment professional with more than 13 years' experience across PwC South Africa, Deloitte UK, venture-backed start-ups, and institutional investment environments. Her expertise spans strategic finance, investor readiness, financial modelling, transaction advisory, governance, capital strategy, and financial reporting, gained through work with multinational organisations, early-stage ventures, and investment stakeholders across complex, cross-border environments.

Her work centres on the intersection of finance, investment, and business growth — supporting founders, investors, and leadership teams through capital raising, investment evaluation, governance, and strategic decision-making. She has developed investor-facing financial models and materials, supported due diligence processes, and advised businesses on strengthening financial governance and investment readiness, with a focus on translating complex financial information into practical, actionable insight.

Beyond her advisory work, Poovashnee contributes to boards and strategic initiatives in the energy, infrastructure, and creative sectors, bringing experience in financial oversight, governance, risk management, and long-term strategic planning, with a particular interest in strengthening investment ecosystems and supporting entrepreneurship.

Zanele Mthembu is Managing Director and Executive Producer at Brown Panther Films, a part-time lecturer at Tshwane University of Technology, and Acting Executive Officer at Sisters Working in Film and Television (SWIFT).

A seasoned media professional, she has 30 years’ experience in broadcasting, production, and distribution across local and international markets. Her senior roles include Executive Head of Channel at Newzroom Afrika and Group Head of Content at eMedia Group. She began her career at Penguin Films, later became Discovery Communications, Inc.’s International Fellow, and earned an MFA in Film from Howard University in Washington, DC.

Zanele contributes to industry development through her service on the South African Audio Visual Cluster Board. She has also served as a board member of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) Council and as Chair of the SWIFT Board. She has served on the judging panels for several major awards, including the SAFTAs, Wildscreen Festival Awards, Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival Awards, and other international honours. She is a Fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative and the Aspen Global Leadership Network. She was Executive Producer on the feature films Otelo Burning and Felix, has recently completed her first PESP5-funded docuseries, and is currently in production with her first documentary.

Spier Light Art returns for its ninth year - and it's looking for artists and makers

Africa's longest-running light art exhibition invites artists to submit expressions of interest by July 21 2026.

Spier Light Art has opened its call for artists ahead of its 2027 edition, running from February 26 to March 21, 2027, across the historic Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch.

Now in its ninth year, Spier Light Art is South Africa's leading platform for light-based contemporary art and Africa's longest-running exhibition of its kind. Curated by Vaughn Sadie, the exhibition commissions new works in which light functions as concept, medium, and subject matter.

There is no fixed theme for 2027. Artists are free to explore ideas relevant to their practice, including technology, resilience, enchantment, and the context of a working wine farm and its landscape. Proposals are welcomed from artists and makers across all disciplines and career stages. Eligible work includes site-specific installations, sculpture, interactive art, digital works, video art, and sound and light integration.

Expressions of interest are due by July 21, 2026, and must be submitted to spierlightart@lightplace.org

Shortlisted artists will be invited to develop a more detailed proposal, with final selections confirmed in early October 2026.

DURBAN FILMMART ANNOUNCES PARTICIPANTS FOR TALENTS DURBAN 2026

 

The Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) announces the line-up of participants for the 19th edition of Talents Durban, taking place during the Durban FilmMart (DFM) in Durban from October 9 to 12, 2026.

As the African satellite programme of Berlinale Talents, Talents Durban continues to play a vital role in nurturing emerging African filmmakers, animators, and film critics through mentorship, professional development, and international networking opportunities.

Berlinale Talents is a networking platform organised by the Berlin International Film Festival, offering a space for emerging filmmakers to connect, learn, and collaborate. Talents Durban serves as its African counterpart, providing a similar platform specifically tailored to the continent's unique filmmaking landscape.

DFMI Director, Magdalene Reddy, explains: “The Durban FilmMart Institute remains committed to advancing African cinema through strategic collaborations that expand international access to professional networks, markets, and sustainable industry opportunities. Talents Durban is central to this vision. Now in its 19th year of partnership with Berlinale Talents, this partnership helps to contribute meaningfully to the long-term growth and sustainability of the African film ecosystem.”

The 2026 edition reflects the diversity of African storytelling, bringing together participants from 18 African countries. This year’s selection process was highly competitive, receiving a record 551 applications. From these submissions, 26 participants and six film critics were selected across fiction features, documentaries, short films, episodic content, animation, and film criticism.

Selected participants will engage in an intensive programme of project-oriented and hands-on professional development initiatives, including Story Junction pitching sessions, masterclasses, mentorship engagements, and one-on-one consultations with leading industry experts.

Mentors for the 2026 edition include Akosua Adoma Owusu, Amine Hattou, Bongi Ndaba, Comfort Arthur, Jihane Bougrine, Mayye Zayed, Nicole Schafer, Oris Aigbokhaevbolo, Ramadan Suleman and Razanajaona Ambinintsoa Luck.

A highlight of this year’s programme is the evolution of the Talent Press stream through the introduction of a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Digital Newsroom model. Moving beyond the traditional workshop format, the programme will simulate a live festival newsroom environment.

Acclaimed alumni Wilfred Okiche and Domoina Ratsara return as Section Editors, mentoring and collaborating directly with a new generation of emerging African critics serving as Festival Film Writers. The initiative is further strengthened through partnerships with the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival (04-14 June 2026) and the Durban International Film Festival (July 23 - August 2, 2026), providing participants with real-world reporting experience, and opportunities to publish critical writing from the forefront of African cinema.

Talent Press is an initiative of Talents Durban in collaboration with FIPRESCI. A new collaboration between the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), and the Durban FilmMart Institute was announced during FIPRESCI's annual reception. The partnership will see FIPRESCI select an outstanding participant from the Talents Durban Press programme at Durban FilmMart 2026 to receive an award presented by CIFF. The selected critic will be invited to attend the Cairo International Film Festival, cover the festival's activities, and contribute to its English-language daily publication. This initiative represents an important step in strengthening film criticism across the African continent and creating greater opportunities for emerging critical voices to engage with international film culture and discourse.

Equally vital is the internationally-renowned Durban Film Market itself, which stands as one of the continent’s most significant platforms for connecting emerging and established talent with industry opportunity. It plays a decisive role in strengthening the creative ecosystem, while underscoring South Africa’s position as a dynamic and indispensable hub for the international film industry.”

As the premier film market in Africa, the 17th edition of the Durban FilmMart, under the theme Shifting Worlds: Turning Towards Ourselves. Inspired by the words of Ousmane Sembène, often referred to as the “father of African cinema” who said, “Why be a sunflower and turn toward the sun? I, myself, am the sun,” the 17th edition of the Durban FilmMart will be the space for discussions that advance alternative film funding pathways, revise models for distribution, consider equitable co-production frameworks and create authentic partnerships. DFM 2026 will encourage looking within to forge relationships and design new strategies that will brace a world in flux and endure the economic and social structures that are changing and destabilising the film industry.
