The Durban FilmMart (DFM) has announced a new Equitable Coproduction programme for its 2026 edition, designed by EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs) and is bringing four leading EAVE experts to Durban to address one of the most pressing issues in international filmmaking: how to build co-productions that are fair, transparent and sustainable for all partners involved.

Taking place under the theme Shifting Worlds: Turning Towards Ourselves, the 17th Durban FilmMart, scheduled from October 9 to 12, 2026, continues to expand its Industry Programme to meet the practical needs of producers navigating an increasingly global production landscape. The Equitable Coproduction programme, delivered across a masterclass series and a dedicated clinic, gives delegates both the frameworks and the individual guidance needed to structure partnerships that share power, risk and reward more evenly.

Durban FilmMart Institute Director, Magdalene Reddy, says: “Coproduction has always been positioned as a route to bigger budgets and wider access, but we have often identified that those partnerships are not always fair. By presenting a programmatic element-based EAVE’s recently-developed Equitable Coproduction research and report DFM is equipping producers with practical tools to negotiate equitable creative, financial and legal terms from the outset, not as an afterthought.”

DFM was a natural partner in adapting and delivering this comprehensive, hands-on programme for African producers. Together, we aim to provide clear steps, best practices and practical tools for integrating inclusive production and coproduction practices into professional workflows, empowering producers to create meaningful and lasting change across the continent.”

 

Four Masterclasses on Equitable Coproduction

Presented in the DFM Industry Programme and open to all delegates, the masterclass series combines best-practice techniques with case studies drawn from the EAVE experts’ own experience, covering the full production lifecycle from development through to delivery. The four EAVE experts who will be present in Durban are Tamara Dawit (Gobez Media – Canada & Ethiopia), Linda Mutawi (Fikra – Sweden), May Odeh (Odeh Films – Palestine & Germany) and Amil Shivji (Kijiweni Productions – Tanzania).

Developing with an Inclusive Lens positions the development phase as the critical point at which to embed equity, care and intentionality into a project. Participants will explore care-based development frameworks, including collaborative story design and consent-driven research, to build a transparent roadmap from concept to production.

Inclusive Financing & Budgeting introduces budgeting tools and financing strategies that promote equity across a production, including fair compensation and practical approaches to shared ownership, transparent practices and community benefit. The session also addresses how to navigate currency imbalances in international co-productions.

Inclusive Co-Productions examines how to build partnerships that uphold creative equity, financial fairness and shared IP ownership and revenue participation, particularly across regions with differing resources. The session covers negotiating fair terms, drafting inclusive contracts and navigating legal frameworks that support long-term, respectful collaboration.

Inclusive Production Practices offers practical guidance for managing productions across diverse cultural and geographic contexts, including inclusive hiring, cross-cultural crew co-ordination, ethical casting, safer set protocols and culturally-sensitive scheduling. The session also addresses production and post-production workflows that prioritise access, consent and psychological safety.

 

Equitable Coproduction Clinic

Recognising that many challenges are specific to an individual project and cannot be fully addressed in a masterclass setting, DFM will also host an Equitable Coproduction Clinic. The clinic gives delegates direct, one-on-one access to the EAVE experts behind the masterclass series.

Delegates can book a dedicated 15-minute slot with an expert to work through concerns specific to their own project, from navigating power dynamics to structuring fair creative and financial partnerships. With four experts running concurrent sessions, the clinic can support up to 50 to 60 delegates individually, ensuring the guidance on offer is tailored rather than generic. Durban FilmMart expands 2026 line-up with animation, impact producing and natural world storytelling partnerships

The Durban FilmMart (DFM) has announced an expanded partner programme for its 17th edition, running in Durban from October 9 to 12, 2026. Three new industry strands - developed with the Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF), a coalition of documentary impact producing organisations, and the Nature, Environment and Wildlife Filmmakers organisation (NEWF) - bring animation, impact producing and natural world storytelling into DFM's core programme.

Magdalene Reddy, Director of the Durban FilmMart Institute, says: "This year's partner programme strands reflect exactly the kind of collaboration DFM exists to enable. ANIMATION DAYS - with Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF)

The strand moves the conversation beyond talent to infrastructure: financing, studios, audiences and IP.

Dianne Makings, Festival Director of CTIAF, says: "Animation is often talked about as if the only question is whether Africa has the talent. We know we have the talent. The bigger question is what happens next; who commissions the work, who finances it, who builds the studios, who develops the audiences and how do we create an industry that allows African creators to keep making African stories?"

A full-day working forum on impact producing across the filmmaking lifecycle - not just at delivery. NATURAL WORLD STORYTELLING - with NEWF

Social, environmental and climate justice intersect, conservation films explore people and place, and stories about the natural world can move between documentary, fiction and natural history. Now more than ever, it matters that African voices are part of global conversations about our environment, nature and wildlife. Together, we hope to invite filmmakers who may not yet see themselves as nature world storytellers, to bring their voices, craft and perspectives to the wild side; and to expand what natural world storytelling can be, who gets to shape it and how these stories are shared with the world.”

Sessions include Beyond the Wild: Representing Nature and Spirituality on Screen, with Pippa Ehrlich, Zolani Mahola, Dr Gcina Mhlophe and Gogo Lindi Dlamini; Beyond the Wild: Getting the Shot, on wildlife cinematography with NEWF Fellows; and Beyond the Wild: Expanding Stories About the Natural World. ODYSSEUS RETURNS ON HISTORY CHANNEL AFRICA

 

As The Odyssey takes audiences by storm around the world, the History Channel Africa gives viewers another take on the King Odysseus of Ithaca. A fascinating two-part documentary, uncovers claims by a historian that he found the bones of Odysseus. Below is the synopsis for more information.

Is King Odysseus, the Trojan-horse-building genius in Homer’s epic poem The Iliad, merely a figure of ancient fiction? Or was he flesh-and-blood man?

In 1991, Makis Metaxas, a local politician on the Greek island of Kefalonia, discovers a 3000-year-old Mycenaean tomb. Soon, Greece’s leading archaeologist begins two years of excavation. The dig culminates with the unearthing of an object that bears an uncanny resemblance to one described by Homer as a prized possession of King Odysseus.

But these incredible findings only trigger a storm of controversy. The people of Ithaca, who passionately believe their island to be Odysseus’s homeland, become angry at the prospect of losing their ancient claim … and their major draw for tourism. Political rivalries between Ithaca and its neighbour Kefalonia lead to the discovery being swept aside, languishing in the dusty museum storeroom, and remaining unpublished.

Now, after three decades of suppression, the story is at last ready to be shared with the world. Makis Metaxas, and his wife Hettie Metaxas-Putman Cramer reveal how they uncovered ancient clues that lead them to search the area where the tomb, and archaeologist Lazaros Kolonas finally returns to the site to go on the record about what he found.

MONICA NEWTON LEAVES THE NAF

Monica Newton has stepped down from her position as CEO of the National Arts Festival in Makhanda (Grahamstown) after 67 months at the helm.

Monica joined the Festival in 2020, unwittingly assuming the CEO role on the eve of the Covid-19 pandemic. The lengthy lockdown and turmoil that followed saw live performing arts across the world face unprecedented disruption. Monica led the Festival's organising team during an intensive one-hundred-day pivot from a destination festival to a fully-filmed and streamed digital festival that maintained a financial lifeline for artists at a time when few opportunities existed.

Post-pandemic, she was at the helm as the Festival again adapted its operations to overcome South Africa's Stage 6 energy crisis, ensuring the Festival could continue hosting live events when the power was out.

Recognising the compounding economic impact of Covid-19 on the Festival’s home town of Makhanda, Newton also spearheaded the Festival's application to manage the Social Employment Fund (SEF) in Makhanda from 2022 till the present.

The project saw a transfer of the Festival’s administrative, logistical and management skills into the management of an employment intervention project that provided short-term job opportunities in the city while rehabilitating local infrastructure and supporting economic recovery in Makhanda.

Monica also facilitated the formation of a collaborative project that saw major arts festivals from around South Africa jointly secure match-funding from the Jobs Fund to form the Festival Enterprise Catalyst.

The FEC enabled the festivals to jointly produce and fund works that could also travel through an extended touring pipeline, creating more (and longer) job opportunities for artists and technicians, more opportunities for networking and the accumulation of technical skills. Beyond these benefits, the project has significantly strengthened co-operation and knowledge-sharing between some of South Africa’s biggest arts festivals.

Economic factors saw Newton consolidate the scale of the National Arts Festival, both to increase its affordability and to better ensure that audiences were not too thinly spread across events. During her time, the Festival also celebrated fifty years – a significant milestone for the creative sector and the cultural story of South Africa - opening a chapter of reimagining what the next decades of the NAF could bring for artists and audiences.

Monica also steered the National Arts Festival’s production of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Mandela Bay Arts Festival. The homegrown Festival gave the stage to local artists from the area- a chance for them to test their works llive, develop audiences and showcase the cultural diversity and talent in the region. With iterations in 2022, 2024 and 2025, the Festival was a springboard of hope for many artists in the Eastern Cape and a step closer to the full National Arts Festival experience.

In paying tribute to Monica Newton, National Arts Festival Board Chairperson, Professor Siphiwo Mahala said, “Throughout her career in the cultural sector, Newton has demonstrated unwavering commitment to ethical governance and tireless resilience - and her tenure at NAF reflects that commitment through principled advocacy on behalf of artists and the creative industries. Her contribution has steered the Festival through choppy waters and highlighted the need for more government and business support for the creative industries ecosystem. The board, staff and I are sincerely grateful for her commitment to artists and to the National Arts Festival."

Monica Newton is succeeded by Palesa Kadi who will join the National Arts Festival on Monday 3 August 2026.

Professor Siphiwo Mahala concluded: “Over the last five and a half years (six National Arts Festivals and three Mandela Bay Arts Festivals) Monica has brought principle, tenacity and real inventiveness to the National Arts Festival. She has been exacting about the things that matter, resourceful about the things that were possible, and immovable where the Festival couldn’t afford to compromise. The Tramp –

This inventive one-man production celebrates the life and legacy of Charlie Chaplin, weaving together the story of the legendary actor and his beloved alter ego, The Tramp. Blending theatre, music and movement, the production features Chaplin's own compositions alongside imaginative reinterpretations of pop, jazz, rock and musical theatre classics, offering a fresh perspective on the man behind the bowler hat.

 

The Opera Singer –

Featuring Fiona Ramsay, The Opera Singer is a compelling one-act drama exploring sacrifice, legacy and the fragile power of a voice. When a celebrated opera diva nearing the end of her career meets a young journalist determined to capture her story, their encounter raises timeless questions about ambition, love, memory, loss and what it means to leave a lasting legacy.

 

Out of Bounds –

Rajesh Gopie's internationally-acclaimed, award-winning one-man production remains one of South Africa's great theatrical successes. Through the remarkable portrayal of 28 vividly drawn characters, Out of Bounds offers a humorous, heartfelt and deeply-moving exploration of family, identity, culture and belonging. Having toured extensively both locally and abroad, it continues to captivate audiences with its authenticity, warmth and enduring relevance.

 

“Master Harold”...and the Boys –

Athol Fugard's celebrated South African classic is a deeply autobiographical one-act play set in apartheid-era South Africa during the 1950s. It examines how systemic racism and personal shame fracture the loving relationship between a privileged white teenager and the two Black men who have become his surrogate family.

 

And the Girls in their Sunday Dresses –

Set against the backdrop of an economic crisis in Lesotho, Zakes Mda's poignant drama follows two women from vastly different social backgrounds who meet while queuing for scarce essentials. As they share a chair and conversation, stories of love, loss, resilience and survival unfold in a moving exploration of class, dignity, friendship and hope.

 

Shackleton –

Back by popular demand, Shackleton recounts one of history's greatest survival stories. Ernest Shackleton's ambitious Antarctic expedition descends into a desperate fight for survival after the Endurance is crushed by ice, leaving the crew stranded in one of the harshest environments on earth. Their only hope lies in a fragile lifeboat and an extraordinary voyage across some of the world's most treacherous seas.

 

Weightless –

Weightless is a beautifully-crafted physical theatre work centred on the memories of neighbours living in a city apartment block. As a young girl's story gradually unfolds, audiences discover a moving tale of grief, compassion and community. Told through half-mask performance and Lecoq-inspired movement, it is a deeply-affecting production that balances loss with warmth, humour and humanity.

 

Epilogue –

Tim Plewman's latest work is an honest, funny and deeply personal reflection on growing older. Moving effortlessly between laughter and heartbreak, Epilogue explores the moments that shape our lives with warmth, wisdom and the masterful comic timing that has made Plewman one of South Africa's most enduring performers.

 

Netphlix-

Multi-award-winning comedian Sophie Joans returns with Netphlix, a witty and inventive new show that asks one deceptively simple question: what makes a good story? In under an hour, this fearless fringe performer hilariously attempts to recreate the entire Netflix catalogue while reminding audiences of the unique magic of live theatre.

Stuck in Dubai –

South African comedy favourite Dalin Oliver returns to the stage with Stuck in Dubai, a hilarious new stand-up show inspired by an experience no traveller could have imagined. While en route to perform at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, conflict in the region left him stranded in Dubai for four days. In true South African style, Dalin transformed an unexpected travel nightmare into comedy gold, finding laughter, love and plenty of lekkerness along the way.

 

Bump & Grind –

Comedy duo Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert bring their signature blend of music, mayhem and laugh-out-loud sketch comedy to the Festival in this high-energy theatrical romp. Packed with unforgettable characters, dazzling costume changes, song and dance, Bump & Grind is fast-paced, brilliantly performed and guaranteed to leave audiences in stitches.

 

Rob van Vuuren LIVE!

Multi-award-winning comedy legend Rob van Vuuren returns to the Hilton Arts Festival for one show only. With more than three decades of entertaining audiences around the world, Rob brings his trademark mix of razor-sharp stand-up, outrageous storytelling and wonderfully unpredictable humour to what promises to be one of the comedy highlights of the Festival.

 

Dead Dad –

Reprising his role as the hapless Lukas, award-winning writer and performer Louw Venter returns with Dead Dad, the darkly hilarious sequel to his smash hit The Best Man's Speech. Venter takes audiences on an emotional rollercoaster as his character attempts to deliver his father's eulogy - with predictably disastrous results. Sharp writing, superb comic timing and moments of genuine poignancy combine in this unforgettable one-man performance.

 

Rugby Mad –

Aaron McIlroy's energetic one-man comedy dives headfirst into the wonderfully obsessive world of rugby. Bringing a colourful cast of characters to life, Rugby Mad celebrates the passion, humour and unique culture surrounding the game. Britney in the Underworld –

Karen and Me - This poignant and often humorous musical tribute celebrates the life and music of Karen Carpenter through the eyes of performer Shannon Kenny. Weaving timeless songs together with stories from both women's lives, Karen and Me explores the enduring power of music to comfort, inspire and connect across generations.

 

Better Together – A Jack Johnson Tribute - The Black Lapels, joined by drummer Obed Ephraim, present a laid-back celebration of Jack Johnson's much-loved catalogue. How To Cook Your Husband –

Written by Janna Violante Ramos with Darren King and Lisa Bobbert, this deliciously dark comedy cabaret serves up murder, mayhem and music in equal measure. When Marjiet discovers her husband's infidelity, she concocts an outrageous recipe for revenge, blending wicked humour with popular songs inspired by Chicago, Sweeney Todd, The Sound of Music and more.

 

Going South –

Created by husband-and-wife duo Nicolás and Katharina Rodríguez López of Hot Club D'Afrique, Going South is an original musical collaboration blending jazz, funk, alternative rock and pop. Intricate guitar and bass lines weave together to create richly-textured soundscapes inspired by everyday hopes, dreams and shared experiences.

 

The Mississippi & Me –

Guenter "Soul Man" Nerlich and guitarist Heinrich Pelser take audiences on a high-energy musical journey through the American Deep South. Celebrating the rich traditions of blues, soul, rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll and swing, this lively performance captures the spirit and sound of the Mississippi Delta.

 

Niveshan and Team –

Accomplished Carnatic musician Niveshan Munsamy presents an inspiring concert celebrating the beauty, depth and expressive power of South Indian classical music. Giselle Niemand –

Rising star Giselle Niemand brings youthful energy, powerful vocals and original music to the Hilton Arts Festival. Melanie Lowe –

Award-winning Durban singer-songwriter Melanie Lowe returns to the stage following a break from live performance. Dubious Gurus –

IAIN "Ewok" Robinson, Jeff Robinson and Logan Byrne combine poetry, jazz, hip-hop and spoken word in this unique performance celebrating rhythm, language and storytelling. AuthenticA Series Lab returns for fifth year, inviting applications from African screenwriters

The AuthenticA Series Lab, a screenwriters programme from South African-based non-profit Realness Institute, is now open for applications for its 5th edition. This six-month programme is delivered in partnership with The StoryBoard Collective, a Swiss non-profit organisation dedicated to holding space for storytellers from underrepresented communities. Series Mania returns as the programme festival partner, where the writers will pitch their projects to industry decision-makers as part of the African Series Pitch in Lille, France, in March 2027. The Canada Media Fund also returns for a third year as a funding partner, supporting the participation of one African Canadian writer in the programme.

The programme has supported 15 African writers since its inception, with some writers currently in active co-production conversations with companies across the UK, France, Canada and the US. Now entering its milestone fifth year, the AuthenticA Series Lab comes at a time when the industry is particularly volatile and unstable, making this offering even more necessary.

The programme welcomes submissions of original series projects in any genre, from writers living in Africa or the African diaspora, provided the story concept is set in Africa. Four writers will be selected for the programme, which is conducted through a mixture of online and in-person sessions, taking place from September 2026 to April 2027. Selected writers will be mentored by Selina Ukwuoma, Story Consultant and Director of Writing Programmes, and Mehret Mandefro, Creative Producer and Managing Director of the Realness Institute.

Selina Ukwuoma says: “The lab offers writers a rare opportunity to take creative risks. It gives them the confidence to trust their most audacious ideas and shape them into series with real craft, rigour and clarity.”

Mehret Mandefro adds: “Giving writers the time and space to bring their boldest ideas at a time when the industry is so unstable is the best way we know how to meet this moment.”

Experienced industry experts are invited to engage with the cohort as guest speakers, sharing their insights and professional journeys through case studies, offering a range of industry perspectives and practical guidance. Past guest speakers have included Anthony Q. Farrell (Writer/Director/Producer, Canfro Productions), Layla Swart (Producer/Co-Founder, Yellowbone Entertainment), Aoife Lennon-Ritchie (Managing Director of Torchwood Literary & Scouting), Sameer Gardezi (Founder, Break the Room Media) and Pauline Fischer (Founder & CEO, PMF Media Group, Inc.).

For the fifth year the programme opens with in-person sessions in Ethiopia, a first, and then moving through online sessions, which culminates in a two-month residency in Geneva, Switzerland, before the cohort pitches at Series Mania in Lille, France. The outcome of the programme is that each participant will deliver a pitch deck and a pilot script. The rights to the material developed through the programme will remain with each writer.

Laure de Peretti de la Rocca, Director of The StoryBoard Collective, says: “This programme reflects what we believe in: backing bold storytelling from voices the industry hasn't made enough room for. Partnering for this lab, and hosting the AuthenticA writers in Geneva at the StoryBoard House, is how we put that belief into action.”

International industry professionals continue to show a strong appetite for distinctive voices emerging from African content, and this is due to the outstanding preparation and mentoring work carried out by the teams at the Realness Institute and StoryBoard Collective. I am already looking forward to discovering the 2027 cohort.”

As part of its ongoing commitment to investing in Canadian African diaspora storytellers, the Canada Media Fund will sponsor the participation of one African-Canadian writer in the programme.

ACT and Tanaka Pictures launch NPO Bootcamp vodcast for South Africa’s arts and culture non-profit sector

Premiering on YouTube on July 13, 2026, the series shares practical leadership lessons from the people building and sustaining creative sector organisations.

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT), in partnership with Tanaka Pictures, will launch NPO Bootcamp: Arts & Culture Edition on YouTube on July 13, 2026 under the ACT Centre of Excellence banner.

The vodcast series brings together leaders and practitioners from South Africa’s arts and culture non-profit sector for honest, practical conversations about what it takes to build, lead and sustain organisations working in the creative economy.

Hosted by Nobantu Mqulwana, Managing Director of Tanaka Pictures, the series moves beyond surface-level inspiration to explore the leadership realities, operational challenges and hard-earned lessons behind organisations that are driving change in the sector.

Across South Africa’s arts and culture sector, non-profit organisations play a vital role in creating access, developing talent, supporting communities and expanding participation in the creative economy. Yet much of the practical knowledge needed to build and sustain these organisations is learned through experience, often in isolation. NPO Bootcamp: Arts & Culture Edition responds to this gap by sharing real-world insight from leaders who are actively navigating the work.

The series launches with its first four interviewees, representing the beginning of a broader set of conversations to follow. Featured in the initial release are respected leaders and practitioners from across the arts and non-profit landscape, including Jack Devnarain, actor and Chairperson of the South African Guild of Actors; Nosipho Maketo-van den Bragt, Founder and CEO of Chocolate Tribe; Erica Elk, Group CEO of the Craft and Design Institute; and Nathi Simelane, Chief Operating Officer of Artist Proof Studio.

Through these conversations, the series explores governance, funding, partnerships, programme design, compliance, leadership, creative enterprise and long-term organisational resilience. It creates space for the kind of practical sector knowledge that is often difficult to access, especially for emerging organisations and practitioners working to strengthen their impact.

“Meaningful change does not happen in the abstract. It starts with real people, with real experiences, doing real work, often while carrying enormous responsibility with limited support. NPO Bootcamp: Arts & Culture Edition is about making space for those voices, and for the practical knowledge within the sector, to be shared more openly. If we are serious about sustainability, we need to strengthen how we work together, share knowledge more freely, and recognise that lasting change is built through collective effort.”

Nobantu Mqulwana, Managing Director of Tanaka Pictures, says: “This series is about making the invisible visible. It is about understanding the realities behind the work, and creating access to the kind of information that is often difficult to find. We want emerging organisations to see what is possible, but also to understand what it really takes.”

As the series develops, ACT and Tanaka Pictures hope to build a wider conversation around the realities, challenges and possibilities of sustaining arts and culture organisations in South Africa. Practitioners, partners, funders, supporters and emerging organisations are encouraged to watch the series, share the knowledge and insights, amplify the conversations, and help identify additional voices and organisations that can contribute to future episodes.
