MONICA NEWTON LEAVES THE NAF

Monica Newton has stepped down from her position as CEO of the National Arts Festival in Makhanda (Grahamstown) after 67 months at the helm.

Monica joined the Festival in 2020, unwittingly assuming the CEO role on the eve of the Covid-19 pandemic. The lengthy lockdown and turmoil that followed saw live performing arts across the world face unprecedented disruption. Monica led the Festival's organising team during an intensive one-hundred-day pivot from a destination festival to a fully-filmed and streamed digital festival that maintained a financial lifeline for artists at a time when few opportunities existed.

Post-pandemic, she was at the helm as the Festival again adapted its operations to overcome South Africa's Stage 6 energy crisis, ensuring the Festival could continue hosting live events when the power was out.

Recognising the compounding economic impact of Covid-19 on the Festival’s home town of Makhanda, Newton also spearheaded the Festival's application to manage the Social Employment Fund (SEF) in Makhanda from 2022 till the present.

The project saw a transfer of the Festival’s administrative, logistical and management skills into the management of an employment intervention project that provided short-term job opportunities in the city while rehabilitating local infrastructure and supporting economic recovery in Makhanda.

Monica also facilitated the formation of a collaborative project that saw major arts festivals from around South Africa jointly secure match-funding from the Jobs Fund to form the Festival Enterprise Catalyst.

The FEC enabled the festivals to jointly produce and fund works that could also travel through an extended touring pipeline, creating more (and longer) job opportunities for artists and technicians, more opportunities for networking and the accumulation of technical skills. Beyond these benefits, the project has significantly strengthened co-operation and knowledge-sharing between some of South Africa’s biggest arts festivals.

Economic factors saw Newton consolidate the scale of the National Arts Festival, both to increase its affordability and to better ensure that audiences were not too thinly spread across events. During her time, the Festival also celebrated fifty years – a significant milestone for the creative sector and the cultural story of South Africa - opening a chapter of reimagining what the next decades of the NAF could bring for artists and audiences.

Monica also steered the National Arts Festival’s production of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Mandela Bay Arts Festival. The homegrown Festival gave the stage to local artists from the area- a chance for them to test their works llive, develop audiences and showcase the cultural diversity and talent in the region. With iterations in 2022, 2024 and 2025, the Festival was a springboard of hope for many artists in the Eastern Cape and a step closer to the full National Arts Festival experience.

In paying tribute to Monica Newton, National Arts Festival Board Chairperson, Professor Siphiwo Mahala said, “Throughout her career in the cultural sector, Newton has demonstrated unwavering commitment to ethical governance and tireless resilience - and her tenure at NAF reflects that commitment through principled advocacy on behalf of artists and the creative industries. Her contribution has steered the Festival through choppy waters and highlighted the need for more government and business support for the creative industries ecosystem. The board, staff and I are sincerely grateful for her commitment to artists and to the National Arts Festival."

Monica Newton is succeeded by Palesa Kadi who will join the National Arts Festival on Monday 3 August 2026.

Professor Siphiwo Mahala concluded: “Over the last five and a half years (six National Arts Festivals and three Mandela Bay Arts Festivals) Monica has brought principle, tenacity and real inventiveness to the National Arts Festival. She has been exacting about the things that matter, resourceful about the things that were possible, and immovable where the Festival couldn’t afford to compromise. We wish her everything of the best for what comes next and we hope to see her in the audience in 2027.”

JUST GEEKIN' FOR HILTON ARTS FESTIVAL

 Just Geekin’ takes place in the Hilton Theatre complex, with a packed three days programme.

 Just Geekin’ @ Hilton Arts Festival is curated by award-winning, multidisciplinary South African graffiti and hip hop artist, poet, and activist Ewok (aka Iain Robinson) (right) and well-known artist and musician Daniel Sheldon (left), the Just Geekin’ Festival hopes to attract a new audience of creative thinkers, gamers, artists and performers. Artwork- Abisola - by Luke Molver currently works as a freelance illustrator in Durban and self-publishes his own comic books, including his South African cyberpunk series Nero, the swamp-noir horror Sunday’s Slave, and the award-winning historical graphic novel series Shaka Rising and its sequel, King Shaka. Luke will be exhibiting in the Just Geekin’ Artists’ Alley at the Hilton Arts festival this year.

Geek Culture is officially joining the programme at this year's Hilton Arts Festival. Just Geekin', a brand-new addition to the 34th Hilton Arts Festival, from August 7 to 9, 2026, at Hilton College, bringing three days of tabletop roleplaying, Esports gaming, cosplay and comics to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

Curated by award-winning, multidisciplinary South African graffiti and hip-hop artist, poet, and activist Ewok (aka Iain Robinson) and well-known artist and musician Daniel Sheldon, the Just Geekin’ Festival hopes to attract a new audience of creative thinkers, gamers, artists and performers.

E-Sports Tournaments, and free-play stations (entry fees apply for play) in collaboration with Konke Gamers, led by Durban-based gamer and adaptive surfer, David Williams. Konke creates accessible spaces for people with disabilities, bringing adaptive controllers and accessible gaming setups to disabled gamers. Williams teams up with the festival to champion esports for people with disabilities, opening up competitive gaming to a community too often left out of it.

Celebrity Games - with local celebrities (experienced or not) will try their hand at Tabletop Roleplaying Games- including whacky musician Veranda Panda, theatre personalities radio presenter from PlayZN Keri Miller, and Steven Stead. These games can be viewed from arena styled seating or watch on the big screen at the fest or on Twitch.

Austin, who explores the dark, haunting, and mysterious aspects of humanity through horror and sci-fi storytelling, will be exhibiting in the Just Geekin’ Artists’ Alley at the Hilton Arts festival this year.

 

A Cosplay Masquerade in partnership with GES-Cosplay, on Sunday 9 August, is open to all (experienced pros, beginners, adults, children and the elderly too) - with incredible prizes to be won. These include goodies from the Just Geekin’ Market, a Les Gateaux voucher, and tickets to ICON Durban, the Renfaire Hellfire Gala and to the rAge Expo.

A comic book launch, film screening, workshops and discussions as well as various live art activations and a rotating line-up of other geekin’ activities.

Young Gunz and Trail Blazers is an opportunity for artists between the ages of 12 and 23 to attend and exhibit at the festival, with prizes including an Inscape Graphic Design course, courses from Dweba School, and a signed comic book. This is through a partnership with Dweba School – the online school for artists and creators, that will also be doing hands-on workshops and giveaways, including illustration courses, sticker packs, digital drawing tablets. Just Geekin' @ The Hilton Arts Festival, is curated for newcomers and lifelong enthusiasts in equal measure, offering a complete Geek Culture experience including a Geek Market for geek-styled retail therapy within one of South Africa’s most established cultural calendar events.

A ticket unlocks a whole day. Day tickets are R75, with a full weekend pass available for R100, and both grant access to the Geek Lounge with a variety of activities, with no restriction on coming and going as you please. Additional ticketed activations and add-ons will be available in the Geek Lounge as well.

ARNO CARSTENS at the Hilton Arts Festival –

For the first time, Arno Carstens performs live at the Hilton Arts Festival with his band, David Watkyns and Giovanni Serci. One of South Africa's most celebrated artists, Carstens is a platinum-selling singer-songwriter, award-winning musician and accomplished fine artist. He first rose to prominence as the iconic frontman of Springbok Nude Girls before launching a hugely successful solo career spanning eight acclaimed albums. Behind the Crimson Door –

Created by renowned designer Gert-Johan Coetzee in collaboration with performance company The Cirk, Behind the Crimson Door is a spectacular theatrical fashion experience that blends couture, aerial artistry, dance and storytelling. It follows Charlotte, a young farm girl who leaves home to pursue her dreams in the city, celebrating courage, transformation and the magic that unfolds when you dare to step into the unknown.

 

Constellations –

British playwright Nick Payne's Constellations, directed by Jay Pather, is a captivating two-hander exploring how the smallest choices can dramatically alter the course of our lives. Blending love, science and quantum theory, it is a moving exploration of infinite possibility, heartbreak and hope.

 

The Drakensberg Boys Choir LIVE in Concert –

Affectionately known as South Africa's "Singing Ambassadors", the Drakensberg Boys Choir returns with its trademark energy, versatility and world-class musicianship. From traditional choral works to contemporary African rhythms, this promises to be one of the Festival's musical highlights.

Midnight in Parys –

In true Paul Slabolepszy style, Midnight in Parys is edge-of-your-seat theatre with an explosive finale. Tender, topical and emotionally-charged, the play explores the fragility of life and the choices that shape our lives, leaving audiences with much to reflect on long after the curtain falls.

 

The Tramp –

This inventive one-man production celebrates the life and legacy of Charlie Chaplin, weaving together the story of the legendary actor and his beloved alter ego, The Tramp. Blending theatre, music and movement, the production features Chaplin's own compositions alongside imaginative reinterpretations of pop, jazz, rock and musical theatre classics, offering a fresh perspective on the man behind the bowler hat.

 

The Opera Singer –

Featuring Fiona Ramsay, The Opera Singer is a compelling one-act drama exploring sacrifice, legacy and the fragile power of a voice. When a celebrated opera diva nearing the end of her career meets a young journalist determined to capture her story, their encounter raises timeless questions about ambition, love, memory, loss and what it means to leave a lasting legacy.

 

Out of Bounds –

Rajesh Gopie's internationally-acclaimed, award-winning one-man production remains one of South Africa's great theatrical successes. Through the remarkable portrayal of 28 vividly drawn characters, Out of Bounds offers a humorous, heartfelt and deeply-moving exploration of family, identity, culture and belonging. Having toured extensively both locally and abroad, it continues to captivate audiences with its authenticity, warmth and enduring relevance.

 

“Master Harold”...and the Boys –

Athol Fugard's celebrated South African classic is a deeply autobiographical one-act play set in apartheid-era South Africa during the 1950s. It examines how systemic racism and personal shame fracture the loving relationship between a privileged white teenager and the two Black men who have become his surrogate family.

 

And the Girls in their Sunday Dresses –

Set against the backdrop of an economic crisis in Lesotho, Zakes Mda's poignant drama follows two women from vastly different social backgrounds who meet while queuing for scarce essentials. As they share a chair and conversation, stories of love, loss, resilience and survival unfold in a moving exploration of class, dignity, friendship and hope.

 

Shackleton –

Back by popular demand, Shackleton recounts one of history's greatest survival stories. Ernest Shackleton's ambitious Antarctic expedition descends into a desperate fight for survival after the Endurance is crushed by ice, leaving the crew stranded in one of the harshest environments on earth. Their only hope lies in a fragile lifeboat and an extraordinary voyage across some of the world's most treacherous seas.

 

Weightless –

Weightless is a beautifully-crafted physical theatre work centred on the memories of neighbours living in a city apartment block. As a young girl's story gradually unfolds, audiences discover a moving tale of grief, compassion and community. Told through half-mask performance and Lecoq-inspired movement, it is a deeply-affecting production that balances loss with warmth, humour and humanity.

 

Epilogue –

Tim Plewman's latest work is an honest, funny and deeply personal reflection on growing older. Moving effortlessly between laughter and heartbreak, Epilogue explores the moments that shape our lives with warmth, wisdom and the masterful comic timing that has made Plewman one of South Africa's most enduring performers.

 

Netphlix-

Multi-award-winning comedian Sophie Joans returns with Netphlix, a witty and inventive new show that asks one deceptively simple question: what makes a good story? In under an hour, this fearless fringe performer hilariously attempts to recreate the entire Netflix catalogue while reminding audiences of the unique magic of live theatre.

Stuck in Dubai –

South African comedy favourite Dalin Oliver returns to the stage with Stuck in Dubai, a hilarious new stand-up show inspired by an experience no traveller could have imagined. While en route to perform at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, conflict in the region left him stranded in Dubai for four days. In true South African style, Dalin transformed an unexpected travel nightmare into comedy gold, finding laughter, love and plenty of lekkerness along the way.

 

Bump & Grind –

Comedy duo Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert bring their signature blend of music, mayhem and laugh-out-loud sketch comedy to the Festival in this high-energy theatrical romp. Rob van Vuuren LIVE!

Multi-award-winning comedy legend Rob van Vuuren returns to the Hilton Arts Festival for one show only. With more than three decades of entertaining audiences around the world, Rob brings his trademark mix of razor-sharp stand-up, outrageous storytelling and wonderfully unpredictable humour to what promises to be one of the comedy highlights of the Festival.

 

Dead Dad –

Reprising his role as the hapless Lukas, award-winning writer and performer Louw Venter returns with Dead Dad, the darkly hilarious sequel to his smash hit The Best Man's Speech. Venter takes audiences on an emotional rollercoaster as his character attempts to deliver his father's eulogy - with predictably disastrous results. How To Cook Your Husband –

Written by Janna Violante Ramos with Darren King and Lisa Bobbert, this deliciously dark comedy cabaret serves up murder, mayhem and music in equal measure. When Marjiet discovers her husband's infidelity, she concocts an outrageous recipe for revenge, blending wicked humour with popular songs inspired by Chicago, Sweeney Todd, The Sound of Music and more.

 

Going South –

Created by husband-and-wife duo Nicolás and Katharina Rodríguez López of Hot Club D'Afrique, Going South is an original musical collaboration blending jazz, funk, alternative rock and pop. Intricate guitar and bass lines weave together to create richly-textured soundscapes inspired by everyday hopes, dreams and shared experiences.

 

The Mississippi & Me –

Guenter "Soul Man" Nerlich and guitarist Heinrich Pelser take audiences on a high-energy musical journey through the American Deep South. Celebrating the rich traditions of blues, soul, rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll and swing, this lively performance captures the spirit and sound of the Mississippi Delta.

 

Niveshan and Team –

Accomplished Carnatic musician Niveshan Munsamy presents an inspiring concert celebrating the beauty, depth and expressive power of South Indian classical music. Featuring traditional compositions, improvisation and works by celebrated composers, the programme offers audiences an engaging introduction to one of the world's great musical traditions.

 

Giselle Niemand –

Rising star Giselle Niemand brings youthful energy, powerful vocals and original music to the Hilton Arts Festival. Working with Grammy-nominated producer Manny Mijares, she continues to build a reputation as one of South Africa's exciting emerging performers, connecting with audiences through authentic, engaging live performances.

 

Melanie Lowe –

Award-winning Durban singer-songwriter Melanie Lowe returns to the stage following a break from live performance. First recognised as a finalist on Idols South Africa, she has built a respected career through emotionally honest songwriting and intimate live performances that continue to resonate with audiences.

 

Dubious Gurus –

IAIN "Ewok" Robinson, Jeff Robinson and Logan Byrne combine poetry, jazz, hip-hop and spoken word in this unique performance celebrating rhythm, language and storytelling. Expect sharp observations, infectious musicality, plenty of humour and an evening of thought-provoking entertainment guaranteed to leave audiences smiling.

Homegrown –

Bringing together four KwaZulu-Natal-based artists of international stature, Homegrown celebrates world-class classical music with deep local roots. Featuring soprano Nozuko Teto, baritone Bongani Kubheka, saxophonist Maxine Matthews and pianist Christopher Duigan, the programme ranges from operatic favourites to contemporary works for saxophone and piano. A rare opportunity to experience some of the province's finest musicians sharing one stage.

 

Opera Trios: Love Triangle –

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR CAROLINE SMART

The second Red Mango Arts Festival was recently held at Sastri College and ran from July 22 to 25, 2026, featuring a wide line-up of productions.

At the official launch, director and creator of the Festival, Rajesh Gopie, announced the presentation of an award to Caroline Smart.

The Lifetime Achievement Award reads “In recognition of an outstanding contribution to the performing arts”.

Smart was extremely grateful for the acknowledgement: “I’m truly proud and honoured to have received this award and thank the Festival for their recognition. It makes all the work I do very worthwhile.”

Smart was born and brought up in Kenya but moved to South Africa with her family when she was about 17. They lived in Pietermaritzburg where she became involved in drama and music productions before moving to Durban aiming to work on radio drama.

This she did for many years as well as working in many stage productions. She founded the D’ARTS magazine for the Durban Arts Association and when funding for this was no longer available, she created her own website – artSMart – which covers the arts in all spheres in KZN.

67 BLANKETS AND CITY SIGHTSEEING JOHANNESBURG TAKE WARMTH ON THE ROAD FOR MANDELA DAY

For the second consecutive year, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day and City Sightseeing Johannesburg have joined forces to take one of Johannesburg's most colourful Mandela Day activations onto the city's iconic red open-top bus.

On Saturday, July 18, volunteers, KnitWits, media and partners will depart from Rosebank aboard the City Sightseeing Johannesburg double-decker bus, travelling through the Johannesburg, streets including areas such as Munro Drive, Braamfontein and Zoo Lake, sharing warmth, hope, and kindness through the much-loved Secret Scarves Shhh... campaign.

Along the route, brightly coloured handcrafted scarves, each carrying a handwritten message of hope, will be tied in public spaces for anyone needing warmth to take. The journey celebrates Nelson Mandela's belief that small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference while showcasing the power of collaboration between organisations committed to giving back.

The Secret Scarves Shhh... campaign has become one of 67 Blankets' best-loved Mandela Day traditions. Every scarf is lovingly handmade by the 67 Blanket volunteers across South Africa and left with a simple message inviting anyone who needs it to take it.

South Africa Wraps the Nation in Kindness as 67 Blankets Mobilises Thousands for Mandela Day

As South Africans prepare to honour Nelson Mandela Day on Saturday, 18 July, thousands of handcrafted blankets, scarves, and other lovingly created items will make their way into communities across the country as 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day once again mobilises one of South Africa's largest volunteer movements.

Throughout July, hundreds of KnitWits, schools, businesses, community organisations and volunteers will gather in shopping centres, hospitals, clinics, public parks and community spaces to knit, distribute and share warmth with people who need it most. From public knitting events and the much-loved Secret Scarves Shhh campaign to large-scale blanket handovers and community outreach programmes, the movement will once again transform simple acts of kindness into tangible expressions of Madiba's legacy.

This year's programme includes public knitting activations, the much-loved Secret Scarves Shhh campaign, large-scale blanket handovers and community outreach events across Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Free State.

One of the highlights of Mandela Day will be the second annual partnership between 67 Blankets and City Sightseeing Johannesburg (Red Bus). Travelling through Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas with KnitWits handing out hundreds of hand-knitted scarves, spreading warmth, kindness and meaningful human connection in honour of Nelson Mandela's legacy.

The annual campaign is made possible by hundreds of volunteers who knit throughout the year to ensure people facing South Africa's harsh winter receive not only warmth, but also dignity, comfort and the knowledge that someone cared enough to make something by hand especially for them.

The Secret Scarves Shhh campaign has become one of 67 Blankets' best-loved Mandela Day traditions. Colourful handcrafted scarves are tied to fences and public spaces with handwritten notes inviting anyone who needs one to simply take one.

ACT and Tanaka Pictures launch NPO Bootcamp vodcast for South Africa’s arts and culture non-profit sector

Premiering on YouTube on July 13, 2026, the series shares practical leadership lessons from the people building and sustaining creative sector organisations.

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT), in partnership with Tanaka Pictures, will launch NPO Bootcamp: Arts & Culture Edition on YouTube on July 13, 2026 under the ACT Centre of Excellence banner.

The vodcast series brings together leaders and practitioners from South Africa’s arts and culture non-profit sector for honest, practical conversations about what it takes to build, lead and sustain organisations working in the creative economy.

Hosted by Nobantu Mqulwana, Managing Director of Tanaka Pictures, the series moves beyond surface-level inspiration to explore the leadership realities, operational challenges and hard-earned lessons behind organisations that are driving change in the sector.

Across South Africa’s arts and culture sector, non-profit organisations play a vital role in creating access, developing talent, supporting communities and expanding participation in the creative economy. Yet much of the practical knowledge needed to build and sustain these organisations is learned through experience, often in isolation. NPO Bootcamp: Arts & Culture Edition responds to this gap by sharing real-world insight from leaders who are actively navigating the work.

The series launches with its first four interviewees, representing the beginning of a broader set of conversations to follow. Featured in the initial release are respected leaders and practitioners from across the arts and non-profit landscape, including Jack Devnarain, actor and Chairperson of the South African Guild of Actors; Nosipho Maketo-van den Bragt, Founder and CEO of Chocolate Tribe; Erica Elk, Group CEO of the Craft and Design Institute; and Nathi Simelane, Chief Operating Officer of Artist Proof Studio.

Through these conversations, the series explores governance, funding, partnerships, programme design, compliance, leadership, creative enterprise and long-term organisational resilience. It creates space for the kind of practical sector knowledge that is often difficult to access, especially for emerging organisations and practitioners working to strengthen their impact.

“What makes this series important is that it captures the knowledge that often lives between people, inside organisations, and behind years of experience,” says Jessica Denyschen, Chief Executive Officer of the Arts & Culture Trust.

“Meaningful change does not happen in the abstract. It starts with real people, with real experiences, doing real work, often while carrying enormous responsibility with limited support. NPO Bootcamp: Arts & Culture Edition is about making space for those voices, and for the practical knowledge within the sector, to be shared more openly. If we are serious about sustainability, we need to strengthen how we work together, share knowledge more freely, and recognise that lasting change is built through collective effort.”

ST CYPRIAN’S CHURCH FETE

One of the city’s most anticipated market events: the annual St Cyprian’s church fete, takes place on Saturday morning, June 27 on the church grounds in Umbilo.

Enjoy a fun morning of market stalls, family activities, food and drink, and a beer garden with live music, while supporting one of the city’s most hardworking, community-spirited churches.

The fete has an extensive white elephant stand; tables of book and music; jewellery; pre-loved garments and accessories; jams and preserves; crafts and homemade goods.

Come hungry as they are also known for their market fare, tea and cakes and beer garden.

A key element of the fete is support for Kerr House, which celebrate 75 years of service this year. The Durban Hospice for Women established in 1951 as a shelter for “Women in Crises.” Kerr House accommodates up to 15 women and children who are mostly victims of Gender Based Violence. They receive professional help from a full-time social worker while house mothers ensure the smooth running of Kerr House.

The residents are taught skills and the craft items made are sold at the St Cyprian’s annual fete.

St Cyprians is at 603 Umbilo Road and the fete takes place on Saturday June 27 from 08h00 until 14h00.

Kerr House relies entirely on donations. The monthly running cost of Kerr House is R110 000.
