HEARTSTRINGS

KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic to perform benefit concert in Hillcrest.

Africa’s premier orchestra, the KZN Philharmonic, will soon be performing in Heartstrings – a concert in aid of vulnerable children. The velvet-voiced Tim Moloi and versatile Lauren Dasappa will join the KZNPO in creating a night of musical magic on October 18 in Hillcrest and SPAR is once again the generous sponsor of the event.

Moloi, who has been likened to the late Luther Vandross, will be performing popular tunes such as The Way You Look Tonight and Route 66, while Dasappa will sing excerpts from the popular musical Les Misérables. Also sharing the stage with them will be BraVa, the acclaimed violin quartet that has won a following amongst young and old.

Heartstrings is set to appeal to lovers of classical and contemporary music alike as it offers a variety of genres, says El-Marie Kolbe, venue coordinator at Hillcrest Christian Fellowship, where the concert will take place.

The venue can accommodate in excess of 4,000 people and the performers and organisers are hoping to draw in a capacity crowd. Kolbe says from the outset, the idea behind the annual concert was to create a spectacular event that will entertain and inform at the same time.

“The KZNPO delivers an outstanding performance every time they go on stage and coupled with the musical brilliance of Moloi and Dasappa, it is bound to be a magnificent performance,” she says. “The fact that two children’s charities will benefit from the event is wonderful and we trust that the Highway community will come out in full support of this concert.”

The two charities earmarked to benefit from this concert are Christians in Action (CHINAC) and Ethelbert Children’s Home. CHINAC assists child headed households and grandmothers caring for those affected by HIV/AIDS in the Ngcolosi Valley, while Ethelbert Children’s Home cares for up to 65 children from abused and neglected backgrounds.

Heartstrings offers us a unique opportunity to tell people about our work, while also raising funds to ensure that we can protect and care for children that have been removed from vulnerable situations,” says Sean Ingram, principal of Ethelbert Children’s Home. “The unfortunate truth is that abuse and neglect are on the rise and that homes such as Ethelbert are more needed now than ever before. We want to ensure that children are given every opportunity to heal and reach their full potential; however we cannot do that without the help of fundraisers such as the Heartstrings concert.”

The concert starts at 19h30 on October 18 and patrons are encouraged to arrive early to avoid the last-minute rush, as seating is unreserved. Tickets R70 available at Hillcrest KwikSPAR, Kloof SuperSPAR, Knowles SuperSPAR, Richdens SuperSPAR, Waterfall SuperSPAR, Westville SuperSPAR, Ethelbert Children’s Home and Hillcrest Christian Fellowship.
