SHALL WE DANCE

Glorious annual dance extravaganza features KZN top Ballroom and Latin American talent.

The ever-popular Shall We Dance Ballroom and Latin American showcase presents its glorious annual dance extravaganza which features 100 of the region’s most exciting dancers as well as top award-winning industry professionals, in the Playhouse Opera from October 22 to 30.

Presented by the South African Dance Teachers’ Association in association with the Playhouse Company, with a supporting grant from BASA, Shall We Dance has been going since 1991. It once more promises to delight audiences with its carefully-chosen eclectic mix of quality dance – all with an underlying ballroom and Latin American theme. Shall We Dance features the best of ballroom, Latin American, tap, modern, contemporary, Irish, ballet and even belly-dancing with a novel ‘Belly meets Bolly’ number!

This year the compere will be much-loved radio personality, Damon Beard. Special guest will be singer Grant Jacobs (Sasol Fever, Motown Forever and Shoo Bop Shoo Bop).

Dance soloists include Latin dancers Ryan Hammond (from Johannesburg) and Lindsey Muckle (originally from London) who featured in last year’s event and are returning due to overwhelming public demand. They made the top 48 in Blackpool, UK (an international competition featuring approx 400 couples) and South African Supreme Dancers of the year for 2008. They were featured in Strictly Come Dancing – Lindsey won this year’s programme.

Two top Johannesburg ballroom dancers will join the line-up this year – Kevin Sewell and Hayley Hammond. Hayley won last year’s Strictly Come Dancing, and came second to Lindsey in this year’s programme.

From closer to home there will be dancers from the Minette de Klerk Academy; Michelle Clark; the Parker Academy of Celtic Dance; Dance Basics; the Razmatazz Dancers; the DPHS gumboot dancers, Mark Wilson Dance Academy and a development group from Chesterville being trained by Dance Basics.

Shall We Dance runs in the Playhouse Opera from October 22 to 30. Tickets R90 (R50 pensioners, students and children under 12) and discounts are offered for block bookings of ten or more. Seats available downstairs and the loge in the Playhouse Opera only. Book at Computicket.
