S’phelele Nzama’s acclaimed dance piece to form part of New Stages production.
Umphafa, S’phelele Nzama’s acclaimed dance piece, is the next work to be presented in The Playhouse Company’s series of New Stages productions for 2008. This can be seen in the Playhouse Loft in Durban for two performances only, on October 17 and 18 at 19h00.
Umphafa is about the premature death of S’phelele’s brother, whose confused, disturbed soul hangs in limbo. Umphafa (the Buffalo Thorn Tree) is used jubilantly by the family to take the spirit of the deceased to the Amadlozi (Ancestors).
Choreographed and performed by S’phelele Nzama himself, Umphafa features live music composed and arranged by Mandla Matshe. The musical accompaniment will be played by a six-piece music ensemble. This includes three members of the renowned Woodpecker Percussion group, Mandla Motha, Siyabonga Mkhombe, Junior Kumalo, and guest artists, Lucia Nzama, Alpha Msomi and Njabulo Shabalala
The bench-mark dance piece caused a sensation when it was first presented during the Jomba 2006, and subsequently at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and Jomba last year. Dance enthusiasts are urged to seize the chance of seeing it at The Playhouse.
