Epic fantasy set in an alternative reality about a plucky little girl who goes on a quest to find her kidnapped best friend.

Lyra is 12-year-old orphan who lives in a boarding school for orphans. She is accompanied everywhere by a shape-shifting animal. When her best friend Roger is kidnapped, Lyra asks her only relative, explorer Lord Asriel, if she can accompany him up north. He refuses, so the beautiful Mrs Coulter offers to take her. But it soon becomes clear that Mrs Coulter has something to do with the missing boy and Lyra escapes, enlisting the help of various oddball people and animals to help her save Roger – and her world.
