SUNCOAST JAZZ – FEBRUARY 15

Free jazz events for the year kick off with Afrique! supported by The Outcome.

It’s jazz time at Suncoast again and on February 15, the free jazz events kick off with a bang! As usual the jazz gigs take place at the Suncoast Amphitheatre from 14h00 to 17h00 and as from March, will be on the last Sunday of every month.

The event features an up & coming band comprising young hopefuls, followed by a group of established jazz professionals hot off the thriving Durban jazz scene. The accent is on variety - but always on jazz! This is a great opportunity for the whole family for an afternoon out to enjoy some live music with the beautiful Indian Ocean as a backdrop!

The main band will be Afrique!, a newly-formed jazz trio headed up by double- bass player Prince Bulo, who also plays electric bass and features Dane Francis on lead guitar, Shemual Mahabeer on electric piano and Neil Singh on drums and percussion. AFRIQUE! offers a mix of originals and covers delivered in an afro-fusion jazz style that bends toward funk.

The developmental band will be The Outcome featuring pianist Saiza Madlala and drummer Thato Mostepe. The Outcome also boasts a rare female bass player Sindi Nene and the talents of saxophonist Mxolisi Mdlalose. All students at the UKZN Jazz Department, this fresh re-grouping of students offers hot originals and concentrate their energies on interpreting afro-fusion favourites.
