Ted Brien to give a talk on Listening to Music on February 25.
Ted Brien will give a talk for the Friends of Kloof Library forum on February 25. It will be titled Listening to Music; the Attentive Ear and proceeds will go to Kloof Library.
Ted Brien conducted the KZN Youth Orchestra for a number of years and has a long association with various youth orchestras in KZN. Currently directing the Durban Girls College Orchestra, he holds a Masters Degree in music (from the former Natal University) and was Head of the Music Department at Springfield College of Education (now Tekweni College).
For many years he was leader of the Montpelier Players, a chamber ensemble that broadcasted and performed regularly in and around KwaZulu-Natal. He has a long experience of lecturing on various aspects of music and is part of the team that presents the current series of pre-concert talks during the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s Symphony Season.
His series of lectures on Listening to Music – the Attentive Ear is aimed at anyone who enjoys listening to music and would like to be a little more informed about the background to what they hear.
His talk on February 25 will deal with how music can influence your life, how music has affected individuals and whole societies; the secret power of music; the effect of music that you choose to listen to in contrast with the effect of music you don’t realise you’re listening to; how music contributes to the success of world-class athletes but can also soothe your baby to sleep or possibly even stimulate development of the brain. How does playing a musical instrument relate to inter-personal relationships?
The talk will take place at 18h00 on February 25 in the Kloof Civic Hall. Tickets R30 (R25 for Members of Friends of Kloof Library) available from the Kloof Library. Contact 031 764 7543.
