BROTHER IN ARMS

Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest to present brand new show paying tribute to Mark Knopfler.

In its brand new show, Brothers in Arms, the Heritage Theatre pays tribute to Mark Knopfler, one of the world’s truly great guitarists who has written some of the most memorable music of the last three decades.

The singer, songwriter and film score composer is probably best known as lead vocalist and songwriter for the British rock band Dire Straits, which he co-founded in 1977 with his brother David. Together, Dire Straits have sold in excess of 120 million albums to date.

Although the band was formed in an era when punk rock reigned, Dire Straits played a more conventional style, albeit with a stripped-down sound that appealed to modern audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s

Brothers in Arms features the Heritage Theatre resident band, comprising Dawn Selby, Mali Sewell, Lloyd de Gier and Barry Thomson as well as newcomer Shaun Dragt on guitar.

They’ll perform some of Knopfler’s best-known songs including Sultans of Swing, Romeo and Juliet, Tunnel of Love, Down to the Waterline, Private Investigations, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, Solid Rock, Calling Elvis and, of course, Brothers in Arms.

Produced by award-winning music revue producer Gary McKenzie, the show will attempt to be as true to the originals as possible. “We’re going to attempt to re-create the sound of Knopfler’s music as it was done in the day,” says McKenzie. “I don’t know many artists who can pull that off as well as Barry Thomson.”

Brothers in Arms runs from June 23 to July 19. Tickets R190 Wednesday to Saturday (R165 Tuesday dinner and Sunday lunch) include a two-course meal. There are three promotional “low price previews” on June 23, 24 and 25 when the two-course meal and show will be R150.
