Well-known comedy artist promises show minus the use of his signature foul language.
POW, John Vlismas' new one-man show which comes to the Heritage Theatre in Hillcrest from June 16, promises a twist like never before: 70 minutes of dark observation, outrageous opinion and thought-provoking belly laughter - all without the use of his signature foul language.
Imagine a show so profoundly funny that even profanity dare not rear its ugly – albeit, hilarious - head. This time, John Vlismas returns from his long running gig as King of the Comedy Underground to break new ground. His David Blaine-like focus will see him through the never-before-attempted challenge of getting through 70 minutes of outrageous opinion, dark observation and thought provoking barbs without so much as a 'gosh darnit'.
"I was challenged by someone that I couldn't be funny without swearing…. “ he says. “But then I thought about it. How hard could it be to make a show just as challenging, just as dangerous and just as funny as I always want them to be without using all my favourite words? If Julius Malema can get where he is, and George Bush can score two terms, and Steve Hofmeyer can survive a suicide bombing by his own colon, why can't I be "black and clean?"
For fans of the filth, Vlismas vows that they “won't even realise that it's missing - kind of like the sugar in Coke Zero, but without the weird after taste and anal leakage afterwards, well, not the aftertaste anyway”.
Durban comedian, Simmi Areff opens for Vlismas on select performances.
POW runs from June 12 to 21. The show ticket includes a delicious two course meal, with coffee and pudding options. To book contact the Heritage Theatre on 031 765 4197, or online at www.heritagetheatre.co.za
