KZN YOUTH WIND BAND GALA CONCERT

KwaZulu-Natal Youth Wind Band appears with the Kearsney College Boys Choir on June 19.

The Gala Concert of the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Wind Band with the Kearsney College Boys Choir takes place in the Playhouse on June 19. The highly popular prize-winning wind band has been invited to tour Germany and go to Vienna in July. Whilst in Vienna, they will compete in a prestigious music competition and youth music festival.

The KwaZulu-Natal Youth Wind Band (KZNYWB) is an acclaimed provincial symphonic wind orchestra made up of 50 talented young music students between the ages of 13 and 27. These young musicians of diverse cultural backgrounds attend high schools and tertiary institutions throughout the province of KZN. The band is based in Durban and its mission is to be a leading symphonic wind orchestra, producing excellent music for a wide variety of audiences. It is considered one of South Africa’s finest youth wind bands and its members are given colours at school the same as any other provincial team.

The band aims to raise public awareness and interest in music, and performs a wide range of music from classical, modern, jazz, swing and African township music. It performs at various venues and functions, from school concerts to graduation ceremonies, conferences and other prestigious events. Wind instruments are varied and versatile and symphonic wind bands, such as the KZNYWB, create opportunities for wind players to perform together in an orchestra. The band offers gifted young musicians the opportunity to develop musically and socially, and to prepare themselves for professional music careers.

The band has been in existence for 31 years. It was established in Pietermaritzburg in April 1977 by current conductor Werner Dannewitz, a professional clarinettist who has dedicated much of his career to the promotion of young musicians.

The KZNYWB aims to develop and train formerly disadvantaged musicians and has a development programme in place to train young people with talent and basic music skills over a period of time through practices, concerts and performances, and extra lessons which are taken at the Durban Music School. This is programme is made possible by the National Arts Council.

The Gala Concert takes place at 19h30 on June 19. Tickets R50 booked through Computicket. More information from Kim Matthews on 083 626 9739.
