Successful competition attracts good performances from schools.
The National Creative Arts Youth Festival held its annual Drum for Joy! Steel Drum Competition at Port Natal School.
The successful competition attracted good performances from schools, which saw the welcome inclusion of two schools which had travelled from Kokstad for the event.
In the Primary School Section, St Nicholas came first, receiving the Steel Drum Competition Trophy with Kokstad Junior in 2nd place receiving the Troubadour Productions Trophy and St Patrick’s in 3rd place receiving the National Creative Arts Youth Festival Trophy.
The Professor Elizabeth Sneddon Trophy, denoting first place, went to St Nicholas as winners of the High School Section. They were followed by Hillcrest in 2nd place receiving the Steel Drum Competition Trophy and Boys Hope in third place receiving the Dobri Paliev Trophy.
The Steel Drum Foundation Trophy for the Most Outstanding Single Performance by a band went to St Nicholas for their rendition of Pretty Woman, while the Steel Drum Foundation Trophy for the Most Improved Junior School Band went to Brown School Grade V.
The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra Spirit Trophy went to Warner Beach with the Dobri Paliev Floating Trophy for best High School Individual Piece going to Hillcrest for their performance of Africa. The artSMart Rising Star Trophy, which is awarded to a single performer for focus, dedication and professional attitude, went to Tayla Gilmore of Gordon Road.
