Acclaimed Indian flautist makes his debut with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

Acclaimed Indian flautist, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, makes his debut with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra on October 1 in a diverse programme that forms part of both the Shared History: Indian Experience in South Africa and the Celebrate Durban festival.

With a style that is respectful of tradition, yet full of innovation, Pt. Chaurasia has achieved great international acclaim as a musician. The concert also features talented young South African pianist Jan Hugo. Liszt’s powerful First Piano Concerto and his contrasting Les Préludes are featured in the second half.

Commenting on the forthcoming concert, Consul General of India Mr Harsh Vardhan Shringla said: “As the ‘Shared History: The Indian Experience in South Africa festival 2009 comes to an end, we can begin to reflect on its impact. By all accounts - public participation, audience response and appreciation and media attention - this has been a huge success. But, hold your breath. The grand finale, the icing on the cake, the much-awaited concert by one of India’s most eminent musicians, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, in collaboration with the renowned KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, is yet to take place. This landmark event in the city’s cultural calendar is scheduled at the City Hall on October 1 2009.

“The concert commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday and the international day of non-violence, which falls on October 2. Many have referred to the concert as historic - one of India’s finest instrumentalists performing in perfect synergy with the only fulltime western orchestra in Africa. It is certainly music history in the making!”

This concert forms part of the World Symphony Series Spring Season, which takes place every Thursday at the Durban City Hall at 19h30 until November 12. Bookings through Computicket on 083 915 8000. Safe and subsidised parking is available at the Royal on concert nights.
