The Playhouse Company’s annual National Is’cathamiya Competition takes place in the Playhouse Opera Theatre on 26 September. Starting at 18h00 and ending with prize giving the following morning, the Festival promises to be as exciting an event as ever.
The 12th event in this highly popular series, this year’s National Isicathamiya Competition will see 147 groups from all over KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape converging on The Playhouse in Durban, keenly competing for the coveted prizes as they pit their skills against their peers. The event forms part of the Celebrate Durban Hala Ethekwini festivities.
Besides the Acappella singing and dancing that comprise this much-loved art form made world famous by the Grammy Award-winning group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the competition will also feature the popular Oswenka and Onobuhle sections, in which some 25 men and 25 women display their sense of style and fashion during interludes interspersed between the competition’s mainstream of events.
The competition ends at approximately 09h00 on Sunday morning, with a prize-giving ceremony in the following categories: Top 20, Section 1, Open Section, Oswenka and Onobuhle.
At 18h00, the innovative Acappella Crossover group will act as curtain-raisers for the competition. It features two acappella choirs - NBA Champions, one of KZN’s oldest and most respected groups, and PRISMA which is made up of young Afrikaans men associated with Port Natal High School. PRISMA members have been trained to perform this well-known indigenous song and dance style with correct movements and harmonies. Acappella Crossover made its first appearance at the competition in 2004 and the audience response was ecstatic.
