Midlands Arts and Crafts Society in Pietermaritzburg offers an interesting range of workshops.

The Midlands Arts and Crafts Society (MACS) in Pietermaritzburg offers an interesting range of workshops in October.

Playing with Clay: on Wednesdays (October 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 14h30 to 17h00), the workshops will be conducted by Wesley Flanagan, senior fine art student, UKZN (ceramics and print-making). An ongoing class making fist-sized (or larger) objects that can be hand built, coiled, slabbed into river stones, seed pods, beetles or any other decorative objects, exploring the texture of clay, its various obtainable finishes: rough, burnished, etc. Learn the process of working with clay by creating art objects. Once the works have been fired, other finishes will be introduced such as smoke firing, oxide finish, etc. Cost R295 (R250 students/scholars) for four sessions or R85 or R75 and respectively per session. This will include a limited amount of clay, depending on the speed with which people work.

Making Marks with Sue Physick: October 8 and 22 from 09h00 to 12h00. Sue covers many and varied art making aspects, such as drawing techniques (making marks, design, expression, purpose, concept, etc.) If you have some drawing/art making experience, there is an opportunity to join and stretch your way of working. Members of the group cover a wide range of techniques in which they work, to add to the interest in discussion. Cost R200 (R175 MACS members) for two sessions.

Creative Thursdays Untutored Feltmaking – making things the sheep who donated their wool/fleece never dreamed about! October 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 09h00 to 12h00. Join regular felt-makers Clare, Jutta, Wendy, Rukaiya and Kerry. Cost R35 per session. Buy your own fleece at MACS and use their wet studio.

Saturdays: Wild Knittingfor Knitters & Spinsters! on October 3 and 17 (phone to check about October 10, 24 and 31) from 09h00 to 12h00. We keep on knitting, crocheting or spinning in the mornings – join the club! Always on the first and third Saturday in each month (and often on the second, fourth and fifth as well). Phone to check about other days as we sometimes knit in public elsewhere! Cost R35 per morning (including tea/coffee) or R150 for the month. MACS Craft Shop has yarns (many hand-dyed and hand-spun) and some knitting needles and crochet hooks available.
