Fundraising concert by Mqhawe High School in association with Opera at Mzantsi on September 11.
Mqhawe High School in association with Opera At Mzantsi is to present An Opera Night! as a fundraising concert on September 11. The vibrant groups of young singers bring to the stage excerpts of operas and choral pieces by Rossini, Caruso, Mozart, Verdi, Monteverdi, Handel and Puccini.
Amongst them are such popular and rarely heard numbers as Come scoglio from Cosi fan tutte, Porti sere, Disprezzata Regina, How beautiful are the feet from Messiah and In praise of Laughter from L’Allegro.
Opera @ Mzantsi (meaning opera in South Africa) is a company for singers initiated by Bonginkosi Cingani, a graduate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal who is currently a teacher and a conductor at Mqhawe High School. The company hopes to create job opportunities for young talented opera singers and to win multi-cultural audiences for opera.
“Mqhawe High School is well known for its excellence in music and matric results and it is now on a mission to revive its musical dominance. This school is blessed with amazing talents but struggling to pull through due to lack of resources. The school feels now is the time to stand up and try to raise funds to purchase few instruments especially a piano,” explain the organisers.
Amongst the singers are the newly formed male group called Amazwi Amyoli, Opera At Mzantsi, Opera Kings, Mqhawe High School choir, Ekwazini High School choir, JG Zuma High school choir, Neliswa Katamzi, Nokulunga Mvuyana, Ntokozo Mhlongo, Nosipho Ntuli, Sphamandla Yakupa, Thembakazi Pendu and many more. Gehard Geist will be on the piano for the evening.
An Opera Night! takes place on September 11 at 19h30 at the UKZN Jubilee Hall (OSCA) Howard College Campus (Princess Alice Avenue next to the foot bridge). Tickets R40 booked through Imagine at 031 510 1039 or email: bcingani82@yahoo.com
