SUSHEELA RAMAN & SAM MILLS

Centre for Jazz & Popular Music at UKZN presents vocalist and guitarist in concert.

The Centre for Jazz & Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal will present Susheela Raman (vocals) and Sam Mills (guitar) in concert with Rajasthani musicians Nathoo Lal Solanki & Chugge Khan.

With her bewitching voice, Tamil Londoner Susheela is one of the most interesting musicians to emerge amongst the South Asian Diaspora, equally at home with South Indian Classical as with Jimi Hendrix and Fela Kuti, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Aretha Franklin. As a composer, arranger and interpreter, she has forged her own unique, inclusive sound and has already gained immense critical and popular acclaim for her records.

Accompanying Susheela and Sam on their South African visit will be Rajasthani musicians Nathoo Lal Solanki and Chugge Khan. A classical Nagara player, Nathoo Lal Solanki plays a range of folk instruments but excels in playing Nagaras. Chugge Khan plays various instruments including Khamaicha, Khartal, Morchang, Vatang, Dhol and sings folk songs as well. A versatile performer he has performed to popular acclaim across the globe.

The performance takes place on September 9 from 17h30 to 19h00 at the UKZN’s Centre for Jazz. Admission R20 (R10 students) and there is a cash bar. More information from Glynis on 031 260 3385.
