BODY OF EVIDENCE

Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre presents ground-breaking dance piece.

As part of its New Stages Festival this October The Playhouse Company presents Body of Evidence, a ground-breaking dance piece by Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre.

Conceived and directed by Jay Pather with music by James Webb, set and videography by Storm Janse van Rensburg, and lighting by Vaughn Sadie, the production explores the mysteries of individual physical memory offset against the concept of a stored flow of knowledge, posing the question, what does a collective nation’s memory do with history?

“The body is temple and fortress, porous transparency as well as taut, unrelenting opacity. It reveals as much as it conceals,” says Pather.

Large-scale projections of a cross section of bones and tissue form the architecture within which Body of Evidence unfolds. Dancers featured in this stimulating production include John Cartwright, Nhlakanipho Cele, Siyanda Duma, Sibusiso Gantsa, Ntombi Gasa, Nkhanyiso Kunene, Siyabonga Mhlongo, Sandile Mkhize, Mxolisi Nkomonde, Neliswa Rushualang and Chuma Sopotela.

The Playhouse Company’s New Stages programme seeks to embrace professional productions that reflect original thought and creativity of New South African theatrical work at its finest.

Originally commissioned by FNB Dance Umbrella, Body of Evidence can be seen in the Playhouse Drama at 19h00 from October 15 to 17 (duration: 80 minutes, no interval). Booking is at Computicket.
