TREES

Tamasa Gallery to host an exhibition by artist Pippa Lea Pennington.

Tamasa Gallery in Overport is to host an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Durban artist Pippa Lea Pennington from October 22.

It has been four years since Pippa's last solo exhibition. In that time, the artist has travelled widely within Southern Africa, recording images of trees as much as she can. She is drawn to their presence and beauty, yet vulnerability in a fragile and often threatened environment. They are sources of wonder and delight, the artist says.

From the magnificent Baobabs of Southern Botswana which tower above the surrounding bush like skyscrapers in a suburb, to the Rock Figs growing out of an ancient geological formation called Solomon's Wall - where it is impossible to see where rock ends and tree begins, the artist has shown for the first time these and other trees within their landscape as opposed to her previous works which isolated them against a plain background.

There is a belief from the Native American mythology that humans were created for the sole purpose of reflecting the beauty of the world back at itself. It is this concept, as well the desire to evoke a similar emotional response in the viewer as the artist experienced in the moment of capturing the image. that is the inspiration behind these works.

Trees consists of large and smaller oils as well as mixed media pastels. The exhibition will run from October 22 to November 11. Tamasa Gallery is situated in Overport Drive. Contact 031 207 1223.
