NJABULO MADLALA & CHRISTOPHER DUIGAN

The young South African baritone, Njabulo Madlala, now based in London, will appear in a recital at UKZN’s Howard College on December 12 with leading South African concert pianist, Christopher Duigan.

Presented by Music Revival and Amawi Omzansi Africa Foundation, An Evening of Song – Music for Life will feature a wide-ranging programme of South African songs, as well as songs by Duparc, Brahms, Richard Strauss, Schubert, Schumann, Geoffrey Bush, Quilter, Vaughan Williams, Ivor Gurney, Peter Warlock, Guy d’Hardelot, and a number of American spirituals.

One of South Africa’s most distinguished operatic exports, Njabulo Madlala is a graduate of London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, among other leading institutions. He has taken part in master classes given by many of the world’s greatest singers and has worked with many leading conductors and directors.

His operatic career has included, among other roles, singing Schaunard in Opera Holland Park's production of La Bohème, Fisherman in Bird of Night at the Royal Opera House, Porgy in Porgy and Bess at the Cheltenham Festival, Serenade to Music at Queen Elizabeth Hall, a song recital at the Wigmore Hall. He sang Le Calender in La Rencontre Imprevue, the bass in Mozart’s Requiem with Cheltenham Bach Choir and the King in Sallinen’s The King Goes Forth To France.

He has recently appeared in Britain with Glyndebourne Opera Company on tour. Future plans include The Cardiff International Academy of Voice and Don Fernandes for Opera Holland Park in 2010.

Hailed as a ‘national treasure’ by ClassicFeel Magazine, Christopher Duigan is a household name in South African classical music circles and needs no introduction to readers of this column.
