This year, the Laugh it Off team have rounded up “some of South Africa’s very own loudly and oh-so-proudly South African youth” to put the 4th annual of Laugh it Off together.
With over 50 contributors and loads of entries, a dose of ‘fun in lousy times’ is guaranteed to anyone with a knack for original, South African creativity with a twist of controversy and a dash of free speech.
Previous annuals have found a pride of place in South African libraries and loos. The inaugural Laugh it Off Annual was a bestseller, the second made the Exclusive Books Publisher’s Choice list (only to be inquisitioned by SAB, interdicted, confiscated and shredded) and the third won a Loerie Award and launched Laugh it Off’s very own religion, Humourology. The fourth volume continues in the same spirit: lambasting the present, pronouncing the future. And if you read between the lines you can trace a trajectory of hope.
From adolescence to Zuma, economic Apocalypse to ZA’s zeitgeist comes the fourth instalment of the Laugh it Off Annual which captures the spirit of South Africa’s young democracy both random and profound and in no particular order.
Edited by Justin Nurse and Bryce Hepburn, Laugh it Off Annual 4: South African Youth Culture contains cartoons, short stories, graphic design, illustrations, photography, articles and poems.
Laugh it Off have been making T-shirts for over ten years and in more recent years discovered a love for making books. Through their content they encourage people not to take themselves too seriously, and to be Loudly South African.
