The record-breaking movie High School Musical debuted on August 17, 2007 and was seen by 17.2 million viewers, making it the most-watched basic-cable telecast in history. Over 3,500 licensed productions of High School Musical: On Stage, the first part in the series, have been produced in the United States and abroad making the title one of the most popular available

Westville Boys’ High School was the first group in Africa to stage the first musical, and they are thrilled to present the second instalment of this hip-hop-and-happening franchise in April this year.

High School Musical: On Stage follows the summertime adventures of Troy, Gabriella and the rest of the Wildcats as they work as staff members at the Lava Springs Country Club. The Wildcats are out to have the best summer of their lives, but Sharpay’s secret plan to steal Troy away from Gabriella threatens to ruin their plans. The stage version features all the songs from the movie, including What Time Is It?, You Are The Music In Me, Gotta Go My Own Way and Bet On It, as well as some new additions and the un-aired Humuhumunukunukuapua'a.

The show promises to be a fun-filled romp through the trials and tribulations of friendship, summer romance and self-discovery, and is due to be staged in the school’s newly-revamped Roy Couzens Hall. The school has spent almost a million rand renovating the hall, turning it into a fully-equipped modern 400-seater theatre geared towards small, intimate supper-theatre performances as well as large-scale musicals and corporate events. High School Musical 2: On Stage will be the first production in the new venue, and will showcase the technical capabilities of the venue, as well as pyrotechnics, stunning sets and other spectacular production surprises that will take your breath away.

The High School Musical 2: On Stage cast features Emile van Staden as Troy Bolton, Gemma Schumann as Gabriella Montez, Kerryn Beattie as Sharpay Evans and Joel Shepherd as her brother Ryan Evans. The show is directed by Leendert de Jager, with musical direction by Luke Holder, the creative team that successfully staged the 2009 smash-hit Oklahoma! and the critically-acclaimed Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Featuring a 12-piece band and a cast of over 50 learners drawn from the greater Durban area, High School Musical 2: On Stage is entertainment for the whole family at its absolute best!
