Russian pianist to appear in Memorable Concert Series.
Following in the footsteps of the previous international artists who have appeared in the Memorable Concert Series at Hilton College, brilliant Russian pianist Katya Apekisheva will perform on May 11.
Katya Apekisheva is in demand internationally as both soloist and chamber musician. Grammophone Magazin described her as a pianist who has achieved 'artistic greatness'. She has often performed with the London Philharmonic, the Moscow Philharmonic and the Halle. Her collaborations with renowned conductors include working with Sir Simon Rattle and Alexander Lazarev. Her CD of Grieg's solo piano works, released in 2008, received overwhelming critical acclaim and the 'Rising Star' award from International Piano Magazine.
Equally at home as a chamber musician, Katya collaborates with Janine Jansen, Natalie Clein, Maxim Rysanov, Jack Liebeck, Boris Brovtsyn, Alexei Ogrinchouk and Nicholas Daniel among others. In this capacity she is a regular guest at major chamber music festivals around the world. In 1996, she won the London Philharmonic Orchestra Soloist of the Year Award and the prestigious Terence Judd Award.
Her most recent performances include concertos with Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and collaborations with Jan Latham-Koenig, Paul Watkins, Jason Lai and Emmanuel Siffert.
For her recital in Hilton she will play four Lyric Pieces by Grieg, Tchaikovsky's seldom-performed Theme and Variations, Op.19 No.6, Chopin's beloved Nocturne No.18 in E major, Op.62 No.2 and well-known Scherzo No.2 in B flat minor,Op.31. To end the programme she will perform the monumental Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, a work that counts amongst the most technically demanding works in all piano literature.
