PEN TO PAPER

A participative project/exhibition of small works inspired by the World Cup

Pen to Paper is a communal participative arts project in which the public are invited to create an A5 pen and ink / pencil drawings relating to movement / motion within Durban, which will hang at Durban’s Bean Bag Bohemia in Greyville over the World Cup from June 9.

Inspired by the Night of a Thousand Drawings initiative and the international focus on soccer, Pen to Paper curator and initiator Tamlyn Martin is inviting Durbanites to get creative and produce a pen / pencil and ink sketch on A5 paper which looks at Durban in motion. One primary colour in what-ever medium can be used. Social cartooning, sketching and journaling are all welcome.

Pen to Paper is an initiative of Bean Bag Bohemia under the guidance of curator Tamlyn Martin, and VANSA – the Visual Arts Network of SA – KZN Chapter. An afternoon sketching jam session was held at BBB recently and this was so well-supported and enjoyed that more afternoon participative arts sessions will be held over the next few weeks. May 15 will be themed in washing and pen-work, May 22 will be themed comic strip drawing and creating narratives and May 29 will focus on stencilling and tracing from light boxes. The final session will be on June 6 which will incorporate all techniques. All sessions start at 13h00 in the BBB courtyard. Materials will be supplied or participants can bring their own, and Martin asks for a voluntary donation towards the cost of materials.

Works will be sold for R100. A portion of the funds of sales will go towards the KZN Human Trafficking Prostitution Brothels and Pornography Task Team (HPPB Task Team).

Completed sketches should be handed in at BeanBag on or before 17h00 on May 21 in a ziplock Jiffy bag. Entries must have the artists’ name, phone numbers and email address clearly marked. If the piece is titled, please provide the title and if the artist is a student or a scholar, please state which institution they are studying at. Martin will head a selection process to choose images to display for the final exhibition.
