SHOWTIME

(Pic: “In the Garden”: digital photograph by Amy-Jo Windt)

Running at the KZNSA Gallery is Showtime, an exhibition of new works by Amy-Jo Windt, an artist who creates collages that scream out loud their subversion of mass media images. Appropriating wildly from fashion and lifestyle magazines, Windt creates radically subverted images of the female form and, in doing so, demands that the viewer questions the norms expounded in these publications. She brings these images to the public space by creating collages of the creatures within a collaged world of their own.

Amy-Jo Windt was born and bred in Durban and has recently completed her BTech degree in Fine Arts from the University of Technology in 2009. She was a finalist in the Start the Nivea Art Competition in 2009, as well as for the prestigious Emma Smith Award, also in 2009.

Her new work, on show for the first time at the KZNSA, includes life-size puppets which emphasise the manipulative nature of the media. Taking the medium even further, the artist places these creatures in real-life instances, and records this intelligent absurdity through photography.

Showtime runs at the KZNSA until May 30. The KZNSA Gallery is situated at 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, in Durban. More information on 031 277 1703, fax 031 201 8051 or cell 082 220 0368 or visit www.kznsagallery.co.za
