NAF: DINSDAE BY MORRIE

Top selling book makes for superb theatre. (Review by Thomie Holtzhausen)

Based on the top seller Tuesdays with Morrie, Hennie van Greunen’s Afrikaans translation of Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom’s original text provides for an amazing piece of theatre set in a true South African context.

Phenomenal acting by Chris van Niekerk as Morrie. His progression from the younger Morrie throughout his terminal illness is captivating and intense. The brilliant directing by Van Greunen aided superbly in bringing the characters to life. Perdo Kruger on piano, playing the Journalist who left behind his dreams of becoming a jazz pianist is real. Although initially one wondered if he could match Van Niekerk – Kruger matches him beautifully and establishes him firmly as a believable character.

Dinsdae By Morrie tells the story of a student who bonds with his university professor in Stellenbosch, then loses contacts with him before they reconnect again after 16 years. Based on the non-fiction novel by Mitch Albom, it tells the story of Socialist Morrie Schwarts and the relationship he has with one of his students, played by Pedro Kruger. Morrie, or “Kaptein” suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS).

It is captivating theatre and certainly a must-see at this year’s Grahamstown National Art Festival. - Thomie Holtzhausen
