The Playhouse Company’s annual National Is’cathamiya Festival takes place in the Playhouse Opera Theatre on June 26. Usually staged in September during Heritage month, this year it is planned to coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup, to afford international soccer fans a cultural experience which is uniquely South African.
Starting at 18h00 and ending with prizegiving the following morning, the 13th event in this highly popular series will see 158 groups from all over KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape converging on The Playhouse in Durban, keenly competing for the coveted prizes as they pit their skills against their peers.
Besides the acappella singing and dancing that comprise this much-loved art form made world-famous by the Grammy Award-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the Festival will also feature the popular fashion sections, in which some 38 men (Oswenka) and 41 women (Onobuhle) display their sense of style during interludes interspersed between the competition’s mainstream of events.
The Festival ends at approximately 08h00 on Sunday morning, with a prize-giving ceremony in the following categories: Top 20, Section 1, Open Section, Oswenka and Onobuhle. The best group chosen by the judges receives a goat. Pre-show entertainment is by the 2009 Top 20 winner, Nyuswa Home Boys
