The Playhouse stages three shows at National Arts Festival.

The Playhouse Company, in partnership with Transnet, will present three popular entertainment acts at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown this month. KZN’s award winning stand-up comedian, Sifiso Nene, the Isicathamiya group, Kholwa Brothers, and the acclaimed mini-musical, Happiness through the Mist, will provide free entertainment daily on the Playhouse Transnet Mobile Stage between June 24 and July 3.

“We are taking three productions from our entertainment sector to the National Arts Festival this year,” says Playhouse Company CEO & Artistic Director, Linda Bukhosini. “Representing our Isicathamiya fraternity, we are proud to present one of Durban’s most popular groups, The Kholwa Brothers, under our banner, along with one of our leading stand-up comedians, Sifiso Nene, winner of SABC 1’s reality show, So You Think You Are Funny. And we are happy to be hosting Imbumba Productions’ Happiness through the Mist, which played to standing ovations in our Loft theatre last year.”

A compelling mixture of infectious music, wry humour and engaging dialogue, Happiness through the Mist, celebrates Ethekwini’s historic Umkhumbane district in the 1950’s. Written and directed by Zeph Nzama, the show stars Thabane Mahlobo, Muzi Mhlango, Bheki Khalala and Siyabonga Phumgula.

“I have rarely enjoyed a show more than Happiness Through the Mist” wrote Estelle Sinkins, Arts Editor of The Witness. “‘Umkhumbane was a magical place,” wrote Gisele Turner in The Daily News. “In this crafted collection of vignettes, its soul has been tenderly captured and set free for all to enjoy.”

Two performances by each of these star acts will be given daily between 10h00 and 15h00 from the Playhouse Transnet Mobile Stage, which will be situated in Knight Street (opposite the Traffic Department, off High Street near the Grahamstown City Hall). A daily slot will also be made available for local performers to appear on the Mobile Stage.
