A festival of South African Video Art at KZNSA.
Curated by Jenny Stretton for the Irish Guth Gafa Film Festival, Postcards To The Edge is a collection of one-minute films by artists Mlu Zondi, Greg Streak, Lliane Loots, Usha Seejarim, Dineo Bopape and Etienne Essery.
The artists were selected because of their wildly different backgrounds: a choreographer, a sculptor, painter, writer, installation artist; all were now to use film as a medium - each inevitably had a different reaction to the brief. With her selection of films, the curator examined similarities between Ireland and South Africa, and she writes that the issues explored by the films “are external signs, pointers to a deeper isolation of fractured identity as nations, as communities, and right back to the individual itself. This was the point of departure in the negotiations with the six artists, the struggle for identity that could inform a message, a postcard to the edge.”
Postcards To The Edge: A Festival of South African Video Art runs until June 26. The KZNSA Gallery is situated at 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, in Durban. More information on 031 277 1703, fax 031 201 8051 or cell 082 220 0368 or visit www.kznsagallery.co.za
