Some 19 years since its inception, the Steel Drum Foundation’s Steel Drum Competition was held recently at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre under the auspices of the National Creative Arts Youth Festival. As always, audiences and judges alike were impressed by the steady growth of this project and the improved musicality of the bands.
In the Primary School Section, the Drum for Joy Trophy for first prize went to Durban Primary School and in the High School section, the Elizabeth Sneddon Trophy for first prize went to St Nicholas.
The Troubadour Productions trophies for second place were presented to St Nicholas (Primary School) and Inanda (High School).
The Steel Drum Foundation Trophy for the Most Outstanding Single Performance by a Band went to Kokstad Junior for We are the World. The artSMart Rising Star Trophy for an individual performer showing a professional yet highly inter-active sense of performance went to Jabulani Mahlasela from Kokstad Junior Band.
The Dobri Paliev Trophy for best High School Individual Piece went to Inanda for I got a Feeling while the Steel Drum Foundation Trophy for the Most Improved Junior School band was awarded to St Patrick's Grades 6/7.
The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra Spirit Trophy was awarded to Gordon Road.
