THERE WILL BE NO FAT JOKES

Review of Fringe production on the National Arts Festival. (by Sifiso Sikhakhane)

It has been a few hours since the National Arts Festival began and whilst the people take their good time making their way to Grahamstown, shows on this year's programme are ready to take the arts by storm. Some of these shows include the hilarious comedy piece which I had the pleasures of seeing this afternoon, No Fat Jokes.

Written and directed by Roshnee Guptar, No Fat Jokes is a battle between the fat people and the skinny people; dealing with a world where external beauty is the key.

Starring the sensational Zanne Solomon who kept the audience in complete laughter, this show guides us through a society where fat people are made to feel bad for being fat. Solomon is then taken through a physical transformation by supporting actresses, Buhle Ngaba, Amy Wilson and Michelle Du Plessis who comfort Solomon with the words "You are not being judged. You are being perfected so that you can live a better life."

Guptar is no stranger to the theatre world as she has written plays such as Sleeping With The Boss, The Dare Date and Rock Bottom Blues which earned itself a standing ovation at last year’s Festival. So if you are in for a little battle between the fat and the skinny, then I suggest you catch this show taking place at the Drill Hall until June 30 at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. – Sifiso Sikhakhane
