2010 AFRICA SALUTES YOU

More World Cup art at Suncoast with exhibition launched by Mandela’s grandson.

The 2010 Fine Art Collection - originally scheduled to run until July 31 at Suncoast, draws to an early close this weekend when it will run concurrently with another art exhibition

Launching for one weekend only, the 2010 Africa Salutes You Mandela Football Flags Exhibition will be hosted at the East Coast Radio stage at Suncoast from July 17 to 18 from 10h00 to 22h00. This will honour the great Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on the weekend of his 92nd birthday and in the wake of South Africa’s superb hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Africa Salutes You is a collection of artworks commissioned by the grandchild of Nelson Mandela, H.R.H. Nkosi, Zwelivelile Mandlesizwe Dalibhunga Mandela (Mandla Mandela). The 32-piece Mandela Football Flags exhibition features limited edition prints of the 32 flags of all the participating countries of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The designs were created by South African artist Athol Moult, with colouring and detail completed by the children of the Mvezo community of the Eastern Cape, where Tata Madiba was born 92 years ago.

Moult was invited to create a youthful and exuberant body of work that celebrated South Africa’s participation in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He worked with the youth of Mvezo, the 32 qualifying nations and Mr. Mandela himself to design and create the works. All prints carry Nelson Mandela’s signature and will undoubtedly become collector’s items.

Pieces will be on sale at R8,550 each or R273,600 for the full 32-piece collection. All prints sold are enclosed in a beautiful gift presentation box and include a certificate of authenticity. Proceeds from sales of the art will go towards the Mvezo community, which is directly involved in the project and is responsible for the allocation of funds to the five pillars of Mvezo’s self-help strategy.

The projects they have identified are the building of the Mvezo Pre School, the High and Primary School upgrades, modernising the existing clinic facility and various community services projects. Through this project the community has already begun the building of the community centre’s ablution, kitchen and laundry facility.
