New works for African Art Centre inspired by the environment.
An exhibition of new paintings by Bheki Khambule opens at the African Art Centre on July 20.
Khambule’s work is inspired by his environment, focusing on the people and cultures that are a product of that environment. Says Khambule “My work is about my daily observations of the city environment, the space in which I reside, the traditions and the customs”. The new acrylic paintings reflect his interest in urban spaces and the related issues of cultural hybridity and identity.
Khambule was born on April 28, 1977, and grew up in Madlankala outside of Richards Bay. His interest in the visual arts began in primary school where he entered and won numerous art competitions. In 2002, he travelled to New Zealand which enabled him to network among the International art community. In 2008 he won the Nivea Art award which gave him the opportunity to work under Themba Shibase and have his first solo show. He has since exhibited in the Karoo and in Berlin, Germany.
The exhibition will be supplemented by a new range of hand-built ceramics from a recent workshop funded by the Kellogg foundation and facilitated by well-known KZN ceramicist Clive Sithole.
This exhibition, which is sponsored by the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund and the Kellogg Foundation, will be opened at the African Art Centre at 94 Florida Road, Morningside on July 20 by Jenny Stretton, acting Director of the Durban Art Gallery.
