Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design’s winter holiday art programme culminates in exhibition today.

CFAD (the Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design) in Durban’s CBD is wrapping up its annual Winter Vacation Young Artist Programme with an exhibition to be held today (July 3).

CFAD is a tertiary institution that offers training in fine art, animation (2D and 3D) and graphic design. It was established in 1994 by world-renowned cartoonist, illustrator and journalist Nanda Soobben and was born from a need in the community. Nanda Soobben, academic head Krish Moodley and a team of dedicated artists and designers have developed the institution into a leading centre of design excellence in Durban.

Students from as far afield as USA, Japan, India, Botswana and Zimbabwe are registered at CFAD. As part of its commitment to quality education, the institution is provisionally registered with the Department of Education, SA Qualifications authority and the council on higher education as a private higher education institution.

In the Winter Vacation Young Artist Programme, high school learners with an affinity to art and design are given a taste of post-matric art studies in a college environment during the mid-year school holidays. The project – now in its tenth year – sees talented youngsters aged between 10 and 18 years working through an intensive art course not usually offered at high school level. Among the modules covered are drawing, painting, computer graphics, animation and introduction to Toon Boon animation. The course ran daily from June 12 to 24 at the CFAD campus.

“This project is part of CFAD’s long term commitment to create artistic opportunities for talented young people. We have had phenomenal response from running the course over the previous nine years, and the class of 2010 has been particularly enthusiastic, engaging and eager!” enthuses Nanda Soobben, Creative Director of CFAD.

Some of the participants have done the course before. CFAD has kept in contact with many of the aspirate young art-makers and follows their careers with interest.

Artists for Human Rights Trust has partnered CFAD for their Winter Vacation Young Artist Programme. Their sponsorship has enabled 10 youngsters who were unable to afford the costs to participate in this unique art programme.

The exhibition takes place at CFAD, 201 Salbany House, 50 Albany Grove, Durban.
