HILTON ARTS FESTIVAL

The 18th Witness Hilton Arts Festival will take place from September 17 to 19, bringing together the pick of South African theatre, fun comedy and music to suit all tastes, not to mention a quality craft market, art exhibitions, a brainfest of lecture and debate and a vast variety of food and drink.

This year will see several of the top Grahamstown productions treading the KZN boards. The cutting edge Swan Lake (so who thought ballet was naf?), the Israeli gem The Timekeepers; Berkoff’s classic Decadence; Tree Boy, and Duet for One provide quality drama while inventive physical theatre practitioners can be seen in Kaput, Breed and The Butcher Brothers. Comedy lovers will be entertained by Beauty Ramapelepele and the mad antics of Raiders of the Lost Aardvark.

Music lovers can look forward to a wide selection of serious music, music revue and performances by both Nibs van der Spuy and Guy Buttery, as well as a single concert by the 70’s hit band Uptown Rythym Dogs. There is live music in the SAB Festival Marquee and an open stage in the Long Table Food tent. SA maestro, Andre Buckland will give one performance each of his classic works Ugly Noo Noo and Between The Teeth as well as a performance of Dario Fo’s Mistero Buffo.

On September 17, there will be a specifically tailored schools’ day catering for both primary and high schools. Entitled Jongosi, a word coined by White Zulu, Johnny Clegg, it celebrates everything young, dynamic and strong!
