LONGMYND MUSICAL SOIRÉE

Engaging event to feature three of KZN’s most gifted young opera singers

A musical soirée is to be presented at Longmynd in Hillcrest on July 25. This engaging event will feature three of KZN’s most gifted young opera singers: soprano Nonhlanhla Mthimkhulu, tenor Mhlonishwa Dlamini and baritone Njabulo Mthimkhulu, along with the SA Singers choral group.

Accompanied at the piano by Juan Burgers, the singers will perform a rewarding programme of vocal classics and opera extracts. Items to be heard will include among others, substantial extracts from Burgers’ exciting new opera, Ubuntu – I Am My Brother’s Keeper, which focuses on the life of Nelson Mandela. These will include the Love Duet for the young Nelson and Winnie Mandela; the tenor aria, In Praise of Winnie – Cula Moya!; Mandela’s Prison Monologue, Phuzamandla; and the opera’s grand finale, which depicts the Presidential Inauguration of Mandela at the Union Buildings.

Other pieces to be performed are They call the wind Mariah from the Broadway musical, Paint Your Wagon; the popular Italian song Core Ingrato; the love duet Parigi o Cara from Verdi’s La Traviata; the duet Là ci darem la mano from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and the famous solo Summertime from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The chorus will sing extracts from Verdi’s opera, I Lombardi, and Mzilikazi Khumalo’s oratorio uShaka ka senzagakhona.

The musical soirée takes place on July 25 at 15h00 at Longmynd at 24 Old Main Road in Hillcrest. Tickets R60 (R40 students and pensioners).
