2010 brings ultimate new sound wave to Mr Price Pro Ballito on July 9 and 10.

The Mr Price Pro Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal’s premier surf event, has jammed with the very best South African musos – and 2010 brings the ultimate new sound wave to Salt Rock Beach on July 9 and 10.

Last year, more than 7,000 people partied up a storm as top acts took to the seaside stage. This year, The Mr Price Pro Ballito music concerts, presented by East Coast Radio, include a laid back, acoustic evening on July 9 and a hard core rock night on July 10 which is free to the public.

JULY 9: This year’s surf vibe is going back to its instrumental and hippie roots with echoes of folk and blues – ideal for those into the acoustic rhythms of the likes of Jack Johnson, Donovan Frakenriefer and John Mayer. Connect with new comers Sidewash and their smooth mix of jazz and funk at 1700 and then watch the sun go down to the unique sounds of Guy Buttery at 17h35. Straight from the Grahamstown Festival and regarded as one of the finest acoustic musicians on the South African music scene, his distinctive finger style guitar and searching lyrics have earned him both local and international accolades. The concert will feature tracks from his latest album, Fox Hill Lane.

Nibs van der Spuy is up next at 18h05. This home-styled local folk singer / song writer phenomenon with his breathy “African” vocals and spellbinding acoustic guitar style is sure to do tracks from his latest release, A Bird in the Hand, which perfectly captures the relaxed feel of South Africa’s east coast. Then chill out to the bluesy, folk-tinged acoustic guitar sound of Durban-born Farryl Purkiss at 18h35 and songs from his latest album, Fruitbats and Crows.

Art Matthews, front man of South Africa’s #1 selling rock band, Just Jinjer, returns to his acoustic roots at the Mr Price Pro Ballito acoustic night at 19h20. Just Jinjer exploded on to the local music scene in 1996 with its debut album, All Comes Around. With six #1 hits and two double-platinum albums to its name, Just Jinjer recently returned to South Africa after a decade of touring internationally and playing with the likes of U2, Counting Crows and Def Leppard. Durban band Maisha ends the evening at 20h20. The band’s name, which means “life” in Swahili, is the perfect description of a multi-cultural group of seven that advocates peace and understanding in Africa and performs an eclectic mix of ballads, jazz, blues and folk in English, Zulu, Swahili and French!

JULY 10: This event represents East Coast’s biggest ever seaside gig – more than five hours of hard hitting rock. It starts with Catlike Thieves at 16h30 - winners of the Mr Price Pro Playoffs in June, this band is about a unique and explosive acoustic/rock mix summed up as “riverside rock” - a mix of old-school hard rock, funk-blues and punk. New Holland takes to the stage next at 17h00 with its unique version of “party rock n roll”. Expect great guitar riffs and harmonies with songs from the band’s debut album 01 and latest album Fools – plus its single Something To Believe In.

The Pixie Bennett Band, fronted by the popular and vivacious Idols finalist, is next up at 17.40 with a stint that will feature its single So Spun followed by City Bowl Mizers at 18h30 (pictured), the Durban-based outfit that is known for its energetic, positive live performances and two full-length albums - Lights Out and City Bowl Mizers. They make way for The Dirty Skirts at 19.25 with its guitar-driven alternative indie rock and dance floor beats.

Flash Republic, now a five piece ensemble with post pop dance and rock influences and an interesting combination of electronic and live guitar and drums, will rock the party next at 20h30 with songs such as the hit Twister. Then at 21h35, there’s the signature rock band that everyone is waiting for - Prime Circle with Ross Learmonth, Dale Schnettler, Dirk Bisschoff, Marco Gomes and Neil Breytenbach. Prime Circle’s full throttle rock mix has earned the band a spot in the South African Rock Hall of Fame and includes well-known songs like Hello, Let Me Go, Live This Life, Crazy World, My Inspiration. As Long As I'm Here and Miracle. Hold thumbs for Prime Circle’s latest hits from their hugely successful All or Nothing album - Out Of This Place, She Always Gets What She Wants and Consider Me.
